IMG_6645.jpegYou would need the stamped number suffix code from in front of the cylinder head to know the original application. I have a 348 from a 1960 Pontiac that decodes as 348, 250hp, turboglide. The only difference between Chevy and Canadian Pontiac to my knowledge is the Canadian Pontiac doesnt have the bow tie stamped in the valve covers.

I had a 2x4 intake that was suppose to come from a 64 Pontiac. Unlike the one in the add my intake had a grommet for a PCV instead of the road draft tube.   Did'nt think they had a tube in 65.1ab2c8f6-b1d2-4113-8106-f2cc1c64d284?rul

What is the tube at the bottom left of the distributor that drops down by the oil filter

I think he's had that for sale elsewhere. Old Autos or FB? Can't be a whole bunch of 409's around Ottawa, 90 miles from the border??

The road draft tube was gone by 1963 on the small block engines. I would think the 409 would be the same.

409- no road draft tube after 62, no dual carb after 64, car exhaust manifolds were not center dump after 63 and 65s were a unique one year only item.

The pcv system was likely hooked to the carb from the road draft tube manifold exit, the other side of it was likely from the oil fill tube to the bottom of the air cleaner. But 65s are uniQue, I am not totally familiar with them.

Lots of questions on this one, youd need all the casting and date codes to know what is 65 and not. All 3 manifolds, heads, you name it, check the numbers on this site.

I am in Ottawa this week if anyone is going to see this thing. In all fairness to the seller, judging by his other ads, he likely is passing on info he got from someone else?

The more I look at the picture of the road draft tube the more questions. I think all the car engines had the draft tube down the passenger side to allow room for the automatic transmission kick down linkage. I think that road draft tube is from a truck. Just be aware that the big truck 409 will have the same block casting numbers but will have the block notched to lower the compression ratio. No way to know without pulling the heads. With truck pistons in a truck block I think gives 7.75 compression ratio. With aftermarket pistons I think you could still get 10:1 with a truck block.

Paul, I agree, it could be a truck block, the stamped numbers in front of the head, if not fake, would say what it was built as. Drag racers use a lot of truck blocks to make big hp, they are also cheaper to buy.p

Use a 454 crank to create a 496 c.i.d W-motor. It has been done.

The 1965 409s are unique and rare animals. Numerous 1-year (1/2 year?) only parts, like exhaust manifolds.

Shown below is a '65 409 with correct manifolds.

You can also see the correct oil fill tube, screw on cap not like earlier push on cap. The screw on cap was part of reducing emissions.

My 409 2x4 was a PVC engine and the oil cap was screw on to prevent the push on type from blowing off at high RPMs.
