Door Latch Interchange


Im looking to change the drivers door latch assembly and the inner handle mechanism on my 68 Parisienne convertible and wondering the interchange of what fits from year make and model. Thanks.

So you would like interchange on the latch in the back of the door as well as the mechanism that the splined inside door handle attaches to?

The lock (latch at the back of the inside of the door) is 7730079.

The control(part the inside handle slides onto) is 8789689. 

I don't have interchange info handy but as far as Pontiacs go, the lock fits only hardtop and convert, 1968 full size and the control fits all models of 1968 Parisienne, but not Laurentian or Strato Chief. Not sure why they don't fit but it's a different number.

So Impala is different? Door handles are the same so thought maybe the same.

7730079 LH door lock (latch) interchange

68 Chevelle 2 door
68 B body Chev 2 door
68 Olds full size 2 door except Toro
68 Buick full size 2 door

8789689 LH door control interchange (Old number 7743518)

68 - 69 Malibu Sport Models (??? I assume that means 2 dr ht? I've never seen this kind of term in the parts book for Malibus)
68 - 69 Impala or Caprice except 4 door sedan

Why do you want to change the latch? Most of the time it malfunctions it simply needs a major cleaning and re-lubrification. Another common issue is the little spring that keeps the outer button under tension fails making the lock resistant to unlocking from inside. The spring can be replaced without removing the latch from the car.
