Computer Board Repair?

Working on my friends Cayenne, having weird electrical issues, led me to the BCM, body control module/computer. He had a sunroof drain blockage and some things got wet. I got theBCM out, opened it up and found a white stain, most likely from water. The unit sits vertically in the car and the stain is on the top side. It doesnt appear to have had damage to anything.

My plan is to scrub this with a toothbrush and hot water, dry it with a hair dryer, plug it back in and see what happens. My question is, could/should I apply a light layer of dielectric grease to the stained area to keep it from rusting? Im thinking that white stain could be from aluminum in the computer board? I guess the dielectric wouldnt hurt?

If this doesnt work, he needs a new/used one and reprogramming.

Don... I would try electrical cleaner first (CTC has it) before the water. Maybe not even use a tooth brush when using the cleaner, see what the instructions on the can say first.. Not Brake clean, there is quite a difference..

I got the toothbrush and hot water/hair dryer advice from a friend who repairs pc boards- from long ago ( it worked on my car) and I already did this. It will be drying overnight.Your idea of the electrical cleaner is probably good too.
Thanks,
Don

Despite the claims of being safe, I have had electrical contact cleaners that have damaged plastic components. I was cleaning a switch and it literally fell apart in my hand. The contacts were nice and clean though! I cleaned the board in a Ford ecu that had similar stains carefully and let it dry. The car had problems in damp weather and it fixed the issue. I also fixed the water leak that caused the problem. These boards read signals in millivolts. It doesnt take much contamination to screw things up.

Try some Deoxit, safe on plastic, non chlorinated.

Is the thought here that the oxide might be creating some shorts? Or are some of the solder joints now compromised?

Ive had great success with MG chemicals contact cleaner with silicone. Part number 404B. Safe on plastics and leave a coating of silicone to prevent future oxidation. Available at your local electronics supply house or Amazon.

Got it back together, no change. Its likely got some damage that is not visible to the naked eye. Thanks for the suggestions.

How can you be sure that this board is the culprit?

The failed boards I've seen typically have some sign of heat damage or very visible corrosion on the board, but I see nothing that looks like that here.

His plan was to get it scanned and see what shows up, likely needs to be done by a dealer. The bcm definitely got wet based on the stain and the intermittent electrical issues, sometimes the left side- low beam, drl, signal lights front and rear, park lamp- dont work, then work perfectly. Could be a wire connection somewhere.

If they work sometimes I'd say it's not a permanent failure. You could try resoldering the components in the area that got wet. Can you replace the BCM or does a new one need the dealer to program?
