How Hackers Could Manipulate "Smart Torque Wrenches" in Factories

Do you think we've gone a little too far with all these "smart" devices?

This article talks about a vulnerability in smart torque wrenches used on some assembly lines. A "bad actor" could manipulate the device to either over or under torque a fastener while the display still shows proper settings. Luckily there's an update coming to correct the issue.

I think we went too far with putting everything online a long time ago.  Every day you hear about another organization that has been hacked with ransomware, or that personal information of customers or employees has been compromised.  When I was a kid I never would have dreamed that someday some guy on the other side of the planet could steal my money without ever leaving his house.  Life was much easier when you just had to watch out for that big mean looking dude who might want to take your wallet... ;)

I agree with MC. All they keep talking about is hacking risks, data breaches etc etc. I say shut it all down lol (except CP) The internet was best around 2002. Now they are putting AI in cars. What could possibly go wrong?

RE: How Hackers Could Manipulate "Smart Torque Wrenches" in Factories

In the past 3 years, between my wife and I we have received 3 letters from 3 different organizations stating that one of us has had our personal data breached, and to watch carefully for unusual activity on our bank accounts, credit cards, etc etc, and for signs of identity theft.  For compensation they give a 1 year subscription to Equifax or Transunion, and wash their hands of it.  One was even from a hotel chain where we must have stayed 5 - 10 years ago.  Summary of the letters: We screwed up and it sucks to be you... good luck with it!

Makes me wonder if all the advantages are worth the degradation to quality of life in the excess anxiety that this leaves us all with.  Your personal information is out there for the taking, and companies are not being careful enough with it.  Plus there are people - organizations actually - who make it their business to try to get your information for financial gain.  At least in the good old days you knew you were getting robbed, so you could at least tell him to have a nice day...

Oh well, at least I'm old and got to experience life in the best time to be alive.  I feel bad for the young ones who have to live their whole lives with this crap - and it will get worse with AI.  I'm sure we have not even imagined where it will go from here (though I get the idea that the creators of The Terminator have)...

Ah.. you must have been part of the Mackenzie breach. We were too. Nice we get only 1 year of free monitoring but have the rest of our lives to worry about getting hacked all thanks to some idiot who sent our data in an unencrypted email. My wife got a letter the other day from another firm that handles her investments. Someone got into that companies Microsoft account and again data isn't stored encyrpted. There really should be a class action suit against these companies. It's blatent incompetence.

No, they were different organizations, but it just goes to show you how common it has become!
