Getting old

My wife had been a dynamo at her fitness classes and no one could keep up to her. Over the past month she was having difficulty remembering and  very little spark.

She stopped her medication and stopped eating  losing 15 lbs.

One 911 call and they found she had depleted her sodium levels and potassium levels.

She came home and no improvement.. 2 more days and another 911 call.

Finally admitted for a week and is now home.

Dealing with setting up doctor, home care and psw.

Her daughter came from Hamilton for the week to assist as she has power of Attorney just have to make sure she eats regularly and gets back into some exercises

Future didnt look good a while ago but she is fiesty

Oh I forgot to add.

My wife was diagnosed with a blocked vein in her neck and as a result has lost the sight in her left eye.   No chance of regaining site in that eye but 6 months of medication, currently eye  drops twice a day

Reluctantly had another 911 call at noon today.

Tonight they were admitting her for a few days to get her meds sorted because what she is on isnt working.

Stressful but lots of family help.

Its been a week of hospital visits.  Things don't look too bright.

May have to find a respite location for my wife.

My wife has lost the site in her left eye.

Me, my right eye many years ago as a result of a fall.

 Giant Cell Arteritis

Giant cell arteritis is a disease of the blood vessels, usually in the head/scalp and neck.

 for more info

https://www.arthritis.org/diseases/giant-cell-arteritis

I was told that it only affects about 3 percent of the population.

Drug studys in the US have approved a needle injection once every 2 weeks but the Canadian Govt has not approved it yet.

The Arthritis doctor has applied for consideration on the costs and we have already received the needle package through a company called Actemra tocilizumab

More later, thanks.

I'll say that we go about day to day with our health as a given. It is easy for us to forget that every day is a gift.
I didn't say every day was a prize.

Cliff, I know you to be positive man and a man who gives back. In the face of things it is very important for you not to lose hope and faith. Strengthen the things that remain. In the meantime I will make mention of you both in my prayers.

I appreciate all of your thought and prayers.

It was a rough day yesterday but today I had a 3 way conversation, with the rhumatology doctor  and myself and her daughter.

Looks like the needle every 2 weeks program is going to be implemented.

Seeing some progress.

Wife has been in hospital almost 2 weeks now.  Taking a toll on the old body visiting twice a day.

Finally had a good cry and relieved a lot of tension.  She has had multiple medication changes to try and stop the uncontrollable arm flailing movements.  Some success as last night she was able to hold a fork and get the food to her mouth.  Hadn't been able to do that before.  It was thought that she would be discharged tomorrow, Friday but the plan has added a few more days to try and stabilize the saline levels in her body.  Saline levels have been a problem as she had completely depleted the saline. My wife read every possible label in the grocery store and avoided salt along with other *nastys* that were not healthy....

When she is discharged from the hospital she will be going to a respite centre for a one month trial period to see how she can recover.

Prior to all of this my wife walked 45 minutes a day carrying 5 lb weights and took 2 exercise classes, line dancing and weights exercise.

Add some more salt to those french fries to keep healthy.

Please resize and flip.  Thanks.

Cliff

After 3 weeks my wife is strong enough to be admitted to Cedarcroft Nursing Home in Oshawa.  Fortunately it is only 5 minutes from home.  It has been a very trying time.  Her daughter from Hamilton has been doing all the research and doctor chasing.  Each week a new doctor on the floor of the hospital.  Her Sister has held down the 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm shift and I was doing double duty till it caught up to me.  Had to back off on the visit time.....

My wife worked with a woman who was into exercise & portion control. To everyone's surprise when she was 62 she had a stroke. As it turned out her sodium & potassium levels were very low. Once her levels were back up she was out of the woods.
Today she is retired and in good health.

Boy, it really is a balancing act.
