New Member 1962 Pontiac Laurentian


Back in the Pontiac crowd , 40 years ago my first car in high school was a 1967 Pontiac Grand Parisienne, numerous cars since then, even went to the dark side with some Mopar products, current vehicles all works in progress including54 Chevy , 57 Chevy , 61 Chev Suburban and my latest , a 62 Pontiac 4 DR Laurentian with 48000 on the odometer. I understand that a Canadian Pontiac is built on a Chevy frame , do most of the mechanical parts that I would need need to be from a 1962 Chevrolet 4DR? Some parts in question at the moment are 1- Fuel tank 2- Front and rear windshield and window gasket 3- Power Steering box and pump 4- Disc brake conversion Thanks in advance

Hi Rick, sorry no one responded to you yet. I am doing a full frame off restoration on a 62 Parisienne 2 dr HT. The body and motor rebuild are pretty well documented on this site. To answer your question, order anything and everything mechanical for a 62 Impala. If you order for Pontiac you'll get parts for American Pontiacs and nothing fits. I am using Chev floor pans, had to modify them because of the differences in the outer skins but they work well. Same response for your glass questions, order Chevy from your local glass supplier.

If you are staying with period correct steering, the one steering box is used for standard and power. Power steering in these old girls is actually power assist. I got my new parts from Classic Industries, not sure if there are any Canadian suppliers that carry this stuff but there may be. I got a kit and rebuilt my steering box, it's pretty simple.

The fuel tank you can get from your local NAPA store and save a ton on freight and exchange.

New body parts, other than the floor pans i mentioned, are not available anywhere, you'll have to make or get a parts car with good ones.]

Glenn, there is a difference in the ratios of the power steering box and standard steering. Fuel tanks are made by spectra premium in Canada, they make the best tanks. Frequently they are cheaper to buy in the USA. I use Rock Auto site to find part brands and numbers, check under1962 Chevy for mechanical stuff. You can use their part numbers and brands for ordering locally. They are also good to order from. There is a 5% CP code in Lounge forum.

 Looks like I stand corrected on the steering box ratio, but the steering box in 62 is the same regardless if it's power or standard.  Power Steering is more of a power assist the hoses connect to a hydraulic shock.

Glenn is correct, and the power steering system with the hydraulic "shocks" is referred to as a "linkage-boost" type. Early Mustangs through '70 plus Chevy II / Acadian through '67 used linkage-boost type.
The power steering that is all within the boosted "box" is an "integral" type. High-feel type & variable-ratio type are integral power steering boxes.
