What a cool car.

I wonder what components on the middle door, if any, are genuine GM pieces. It looks longer than the front door. Maybe a hardtop door skin? It's hard to imagine they scratch built a door when so few conversion will have been done.

From what I remember of helping restore the 62 Chevy 8 door wagon for the Impala club, the center stretch part was all hand made, and rather crude under the skin. It's possible they used factory type door skins here as the body lines are straight. Where in the 62 Chev it angles down from front to back and they just made it straight for the stretch.

I would say it's definitely a custom made door skin. It's not a front door - they are contoured to match into the fender. Not a rear door for obvious reasons. Plus, the skin has to be shaped such that it matches up with the front and rear doors exactly, which would normally match up with each other. The door sash (window frame) is unique as well (as would be the glass).

I guess that's why they called themselves coachbuilders. Very cool car.

I'm wondering what its original purpose was. The airport cars I've seen often had a huge roof rack on them for all the luggage. Maybe it was a funeral car?

Bill Roots parents were the original owners of this vehicle. Mr. Root was one of six children and this family car was used for everything from their summer vacations to grocery store runs. He kept it purely for sentimental reasons and it has been garage stored for decades.
