Tire balance question

I have a fwd Honda, I bought a new set of Michelin Defender 2 for it, had them  balanced twice where I bought them, bad shake at 100-120kph, had them balanced at another shop, still bad. Have 3,000 kms on the new tires, they are rated for 130,000, Ive had them before and really liked them.

The alloy rims were fine with the old tires, none of the shops say they are bent. I have a set of snows on separate rims, tried them in case it was something else in the drivetrain, no issues.

My question is, could a bad tire or tires still balance ok even with a flaw?

I can't answer your question but my co-worker had the same problem with his Honda.

Turns out his Ridgeline needed new CV shafts.

He blamed vibration on the old tires and had thought the new ones were just not balanced properly.

I agree, it could be a cv joint on the verge of going out, makes me want to only drive rear wheel drive!!

I did look at them, look fine whatever that means. Tried tight left and right turns, no obvious noises.

Could be a number of things I guess like engine mount or suspension bushings, even transmission shudder. I had a good place do a 4 wheel alignment not long ago and did a transmission fluid flush 3 times (my regular maintenance for this 6 speed auto) which is supposed to help any shudder.

Still doesnt explain why the winter tires are good, while the new ones arent.   Perhaps you could put the winters on and try one summer tire/wheel at a time to see if you can single out a bad one?

I've seen differences in tires before, 4 brand new tires where some just aren't made right internally and require more balancing weights than others.  I recall Toyo used to be bad for that.

Another thought is how they were balanced.  I recall about 10 or 15 years ago the dealerships were required to use road force type balancers that applied force to the tire as it was being balanced.  Apparently it made a difference in the outcome.

Best of luck with it!

I'd try another shop. Some shops have fancier balancers than others. One type is a "Road force" balancer that puts pressure on the tire while spinning it to simulate it being on a car. It can also tell if you need to index the tire (dismount it and move it a few degrees on the rim and remount it). Some dealers like Lexus usually have machines like this. I bet it's now about $150 for one of those wheel balance services though.

One of the possibilities here being worn cv axles causing a vibration issue, I priced new ones for them. Honda dealer $1600 and $1300 + tax, one was backordered. I checked rock auto and several local national parts places. Rock was about $250 + tax, including shipping with about 5 days or so delivery, NAPA was $356 + tax, delivery the next day. According to Bob is the Oil Guy, the NAPA is made by Cardone, the Rock price was for Cardone. According to the Honda brain trust internet who are very pro Honda original parts, the Cardone product is good.

The car world is crazy when a manufacturer wants $2900 for 2 Axles and Napa, who are not always the cheapest, want $356.

If you suspect a balance problem. Then you NEED to find a shop with a Road force machine, absolutely the best tire balancing machine.

I had a set balanced at the local Acura dealer a few years ago.  Dont remember the cost as I had them mount the tires there as well, but IIRC the whole deal was less than a hundred.  Not a vibration from them, either.

Place you bought them from should be responsible for the vibration, take it back and tell them it does not shake with snow tires so why with these new ones.
Have seen new tires that have radial force variation ( soft spot ) in tire and required replacement. Never seen a CV shaft cause vibration like that. Doesn't
do it with snow tires so not CV shafts.
