Hello out there, I just recently purchased a 56 4 door hard top that has been parked for ten years. I was trying  decode the the tags but any browser I find is all American versions. Is there any web sites that can break down Canadian codes? This car although being all original except for one repaint has a bad engine and Im trying to figure what engine it is. I is a V-8 power steering and power brakes car but it looks like a rod has come through the side of the oil pan and Im sure its made a mess of the cylinder wall. I would like to keep the car as original as possible but I also know it will never end up at a Barret Jackson auction. Thanks in advance and I like seeing that there is a following for these beautiful cars.

Welcome here, you've come to the best place on the internet for your Canadian Pontiac.

I can't help with decoding but some guys here sure will be able to help you. Your car would have come with a 265 V8 or a 6 cylinder when new.

Vintage Vehicle Services have GM documents for GM vehicles sold new or built in Canada, they may have what you are looking for for. Not sure when the 283 arrived to replace the 265.

He there, thank you after reading up here I was able to locate the block casting number and indeed 265. I want to try to keep her as original as possible and just enjoy it as a beautiful classic cruiser. I will share photos with you all but its not as cool as a two door but that doesn?t matte

Hi Taylor, yes same car. Shes got some inner rocker work ahead, was rear ended once upon a time so trunk floor is crum up a bit and had a rod go thru the side of the oil pan. Its all original unfortunately from sitting all that time the mice had a field day with the interior. Nothing that cant be fixed. Shell be a work in progress but nice to have somt that you dont see around often.

First year of a 4 door hardtop for a Canadian Pontiac. There is a 265 V8 at a reasonably price located in Sudbury ready to drop in if you are contemplating going that direction. You have all the original parts from the engine to disguise a never small block 350 / 327 to look like a 265.

The 265 was on Kijiji Sudbury. Call R&R Classics in Val Caron I am pretty sure it was them that had it for sale. I checked Kijiji today but could not find the add.
