70 Chevelle 300 Deluxe

Thought i would continue on the story of the 300 Deluxe that Cam had created a image of back in i think 2009 he said. Having purchased the car from SteveW back in 2019 i knew i had a lot of work to do in making this car as correct as i could get it.But the story goes back to the Manitoba owner that Steve had bought the car from.  In talking to Steve while inquiring on the 300 Deluxe he had given me Randy's number and told me to call him and ask about its history.Randy was really excited to talk about the Chevelle as he had owned hundreds of cars over the years but kept this odd ball Chevelle knowing how rare it really was.The more excited i was   the more excited Randy was as the car really meant a lot to him.Having a 70 Chevelle 4spd that was just completed with paint and body and a ton of new parts i thought "what the hell" cant go too far wrong?? Steve and i came to an agreement and after having a third party inspected it i was ready to buy it and did just that.

Next question. How do i get it back to Saskatchewan from southern Ontario?? After getting a few shipping quotes Randy and i talked again.I had a truck and enclosed trailer but didnt have the time to run for it.The more we talked the more we connected and he said "why dont i go get it for you??" So   we met in Portage La Prairie  sat and had a coffee and i handed over the keys to my 2015 Duramax and my trailer to a man i just met 15 mins before!! After really questioning what i just did on the way home Randy was on his way to get the Chevelle the next day with his wife. After getting to Steve's a couple days later Randy had sent me some pictures and was super excited to see his old Chevelle finally painted in its original color of Green Mist 45 45.Him and Steve had a good visit and loaded the car and away they went heading back to Brandon where we would meet.Once they returned we met and had coffee and talked about the Chevelle and he was really happy i was taking it on to hopefully complete the car after all these years.Randy and i continued talking lots about the 300 Deluxe and kept trying to get the car as correct as possible with updates sent to Randy as needed.

I had put an add on Kijiji asking if anyone had a green 70 300 Deluxe interior for sale. No takers but one guy named Greg did answer and he had a green cloth bench from a 70 Mailbu...but he was in Nova Scotia!!He asked me how i would ever get it and i replied id find a way!He told me to work on it and we'd talk in a week.Got back to Greg and i asked him what he wanted for the full front bench and the back skins...his reply was ill give it to you!The seat and skins were immaculate and stored in his garage rafters for many years after someone had "given' him a set of green buckets and console from a 70 Monte to finish his Malibu. All he asked in return was i "pay it forward" to another car guy which i happily agreed was no problem.Had it shipped via a moving truck to Winnipeg on a pallet with moving blankets and it arrived as decribed! One step closer with a near correct set of seats.

So where do we start??  I was pretty happy with the car but i needed to take it to the next level which was a body off the frame.Got it in to my good friend Warren and in less than a couple days the body was off and the frame sent for blasting and expoxy.Warren ended up having a major heart attack soon after that and required a 7 way bypass which really made me obviously concerned for my good friend and really left the whole project with a high level of uncertainty.Time went on and Warren slowly improved and a little more work was completed each day   each week a little more.In the mean time i had a time correct A 30 '70 402 block completed and built as time correct as i could get from carb to pan.Had both the M20 and 3:31 rear end rebuilt and once it was completed the car was fully reassembled and i was ready to go.

In the mean time i enjoyed driving the car and always watched for the hard to find door panels that are very similar to the Heavy Chevys. Finally found a set in Florida and had them shipped back! One more thing crossed off!

Car pretty much stayed as is until August 2023 when my buddy seen an ad for a complete interior for a 70 300 Deluxe...and it was green!!! Reached out and the seller was in Greenbrier Tennessee no.Wow   how will this work?  Got talking to the seller and Chuck turned out to be Chuck Hanson from Horsepower TV and the former president of the ACES CHEVELLE CLUB.Super nice gentleman and we agreed on a price    plus his nephew was coming down from Minnesota and would bring it back with him. One more side note...there was another big name in this full complete green interior that included a beautiful green rubber mat that the 300 Deluxes had.The guy Chuck had purchased the interior from 25 years ago was Dale JR.Every car guy alive knows who Dale JR is...i asked THE DALE JR?? He said Dale JR had bought a 42,000 mile green '70 300 Deluxe that had a perfect body for a pro touring car he wanted to complete.Crazy part was Chuck had inquired to Randy about the car and it ended up just sold to Steve. When i sent pictures to Chuck with the GM docs he knew that it was car he had tried to buy for his interior.

So thats the story on the 300 Deluxe.Super rare and one of 20 on the GM docs.I've got ownership back to the 80s but not much before. Car was sold at Sherwood Chev in Saskatoon and was ordered without PS PB but was ordered with rallys and white letter tires!!Hoping now that its complete to get it up to Saskatoon and see if someone doesn't recognize it and i can capture a little more info on this rare 70 Chevelle.

Wow! Incredible Chevelle! It's amazing how the planets seem to line up when we need something for our cars like the interior you found for yours.

There was one similar in my area in the late 70s. Black 300 deluxe with black interior with a 350/four speed Muncie. It also had the gauge package like on the SS models. Unfortunately it was at the time just a used car that one of our customers bought for a winter beater. It had its share of Ontario rust being seven or eight years old. It would have been nice to have today. Probably quite rare also.

300 Deluxes were a small minority back in the 1970s. Even 350s were scarce, mostly sixes and 307s.

As for your Chevelle, WOW!!! I truly appreciate the oddball cars, and that one is pure and simple. In a sea of SS 396s and even the odd stripped LS6, yours is two of a kind. Wait, say what?

When you posted I checked back in archived stuff but never found the picture I threw together, basically a collage of stuff pointing to your car. Probably around 2009 I'm guessing?
Anyway there is a Team Chevelle member from way back named Ranier. He located the carcass of a 70˝ base Chevelle sport coupe that would've had even less trim than the 300 Deluxe in Canada. What's more, the car originally had an LS3 / M20 drivetrain and was special-ordered in Monaco Orange with D88 hood and deck stripes. Let me see what I can find...

70400SOinterior.jpg

And an artistic rendering Ranier had done of what it looked like:

70Chevelle400print2.jpg(2006! Farther back than I thought.)

Next a Misty Turquoise U.S. Chevelle sport coupe (307s had no numerals on the base U.S. models):

08_3.jpg(look familiar?)

64_3.jpg(No Chevy emblem or bright grille trim as on a 300 Deluxe)

6d_3.jpg(No silver tail light accents)

7c_3.jpg(black all-vinyl with headrests detached)

And some cloth & vinyl interior shots. I noticed the cloth is the same pattern as the base Nova equivalent, and our 1970 Biscayne also had the same cloth pattern. That means the Strato Chief would also use it.

interior002.jpg

(Above is same interior from 2 different cars).

Again, I think what you ended up with is a knockout! Beautiful.

I just noticed your car was spec'd with C24 recessed-park wipers. A pretty rare option on 300 Deluxes in 1969 & 70.

You filled up the clock blank with a tachometer and fitted it like it belongs. Nice touch!

As an observation I don't see N10 - dual exhausts on the GMVVS document.

So, was 400 BBC delivered with single exhaust and duals added later?

Thats a great question Ray and im hoping to find that out. Thinking Cam might have an idea possibly. I know a guy in Edmonton who has a Malibu 400 BBC 4spd and his car has very similar options on the GMVVS and no N10 option on it either. His Malibu 400 is one of 75 on the GM docs.

The LS3 optioned Chevelles from 1970 to 1972 came with dual exhaust as part of the option. Would have had resonators in the tail pipes.

 100% agree.

The small blocks came with a single exhaust system standard. In 1970 you could optionally order duals with the 350s (2 or 4 barrel). For 1971 they dropped the N10 option from the 350s while the 400 BBC continued with dual & resonators.

Here's a few pics of the type of resonator used.

(The above pics are of a 1971 Chevelle SS convertible, L48 350 with a 1970-style dual exhaust system that would have been carried-over to the 1971s had Chevrolet not dropped N10 as an option.)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but years ago I had a block from a late build 69 SS Chevelle and I believe it was a 402. I would have said maybe it was a May or June build date?

Carl is right, the 402 came out late in the 1969 run because of extended build-outs (the 1969 Camaro ran long, for one).
I've heard it said that the overbore was done for emissions reasons. The reason may have been that they may have gotten a slight break on emissions rules for engines over 400 cubic inches. It seems weird today but those were the early days of smogging. There were many teething problems and the emissions were hard to bring down, given the crude technology in those early days. Larger engines have lower volumetric efficiency and needed to be strangled just that much more (no BBC in California 1972 or 1975). So in the early days they got a slight break over 400 cubes.

this is an interesting discussion!

Wasn't the "300 Deluxe" essentially a lower trim level Chevelle?

Did the "deluxe" denote a non-post car?

last question regarding this rendering:

/download.spark?ID=2658430&aBID=118110

Aren't those 1969 hubcaps?

I thought those caps were 68/69 - and for 1970 they went to the rounded style?

The 300 deluxe was the base trim level for the Chevelle in Canada for 1970. In the U.S. the bottom trim level was Chevelle. The 300 deluxe badges were eliminated south of the border but Canadian Chevelles kept the 300 deluxe up to 1972. I had a 1970 300 deluxe and also a 1971 300 deluxe with those style hubcaps.

The round Baby Moon style hubcaps were introduced on the 1970 Camaro. For 1971, on Novas & Chevelles they replaced the 1968 style cap that ran through 1970 on those models (the 1968 caps were also base on 1970˝ G10 Chevy Vans with 14" wheels).
The Baby Moon hubcap with the Chevy bow-tie in the middle were referred to officially as "Rally Moon" hubcaps. They ran through 1973 models before being replaced by smooth anodized aluminum hubcaps for 1974. The anodized hubcaps came base on Malibus through 1983 and base Camaros through 1985.
