At macsleth's suggestion, I jacked up the car off rear suspension, and the drive shaft is still too long.. So I tried the yoke and shaft into the 350 turbo, still sitting on floor. Amazing! the yoke slides ALL the way in to the trans, leaving room for driveshaft install.. BUT the yoke and shaft only slide in to shiny part on Muncie, therefore NOT allowing driveshaft install...now what? install 350 back in?
Hmmm, think someone else will pipe up and grab the credit for that good suggestion. Mine would have been, take it to someone and tell them to fix it. LOL. Maybe the shaft got swapped over the winter and you forgot that you sold/lent the original shaft to your uncles, mother's father's neighbor's kids friends mailman. I t happened so quickly, you forgot. Can/did you swap yokes? do you have any other yokes lying around? I'll have to re-read the posts and see where your at with this. We swapped an P/G for a 4speed once, in my brother-in-laws 67 Chev pick-up. We needed different everything. Went thru 3 shafts before we found one that works. (2 piece shaft). When he decided that the P/G sucked and he wanted the 4 speed back, we had all the old parts. That second swap was quick and easy. His truck was down for about 6 weeks the first time. A week-end the second time. Changed from P/G to Th350 in my 66, used a shaft from an Olds, with a yoke from something else. Lots of fun, but it'll be great when it's finally sorted out and you're back on the road.
I checked with Peter in New Brunswick, (who built Muncie for me) and he went out, and tried a new yoke on 3 different shafts, and only 1 slid in all the way. He says they sometime grease yoke, and oil shaft and tap in place. Muncie had new bushing in rear, that may require persuasion... I will pound the snot out of it, and see if hes right..
Are there any nicks on the top of the yoke that may be grabbing the new bushing? Maybe running some crocus cloth on the end of the yoke might help?????
I managed to drag myself out to shop, for a chance to get the driveshaft in...I checked for burrs (none) and put oil inside, on shaft and grease ,on outside of yoke I tapped, and then pounded 500-600 times and yoke will not go in all the way! With read end hanging down, I figure that ,if it ever did go in, it will not slide back and forth and will shake violently.. So of course the sides of the yoke are rounded off and the yoke will never come out.. So that it! I'm done with this disappointing piece of @#@* If someone had a little money, and a truck, she would be gone!! but I have decided to pull the 4 speed, and tow it uptown to my storage place.. Maybe when I am gone, someone will find it, and be able to brag about their barn find! lol I am so sick of working on old crap, with parts that are supposed to fit.. no wonder there are so many projects sitting around.. I have more to do, than "enjoy" working on this stress machine.. If you want a cheap car PM me and I will make arrangements for delivery..C2
Carl, Below is a link to a Muncie specialist in Canada. You may be aware of these guys already. Maybe they can advise. Also, do you have another yoke you can try? I ran into the same problem a few years back with a PG - one yoke fit but but not the other. And what year & model of manufacture is the trans? I have a '73 M20 with a different spline count from the 2 '68 M21s that I have.
tHANKS , but its not that nice.. its rust free, but the body shop paint job ,from 1996 is not as nice as it could be.. But on the other hand try to find a two door.. thanks your words keep me trying...
