I'm sure I asked this question (to Dave I think) but I forgot the answer. Was the water pump on the 69 427 in the B body's considered a "Long" or Short" one?

69 427 is a long water pump.  When they switched the alternator to the passenger side for 69, they also went to a long water pump.

correct todd, and if you're after the 'correct' looking '69-'70 pump, try fenco.
i just bought a nice '68 sm/blk pump from them.

I found the correct number for the Fenco water pump Dave. Are they available at most parts suppliers?

I got the intake installed today. I'll try to snap some pics tomorrow. Tiny- you may have saved my engine. I mentioned to him about removing a bunch of carbon from the exhaust port (egr). Tiny mentioned to make sure I get every piece out as many a valve has been bent from carbon wedging between it and the seat. I shone my trouble light into the exhaust port and sure enough- pieces sitting on the valve ready to ruin my day. I picked out what I could reach and used compressed air to get the rest..

I was in the same boat with a 327 i picked up from a storage yard about 20 years and four vehicals and 200000. The supposed bad engine sat outside for 15 years never had any power, guy pulled it in favor of  a 350, his mistake. when i ran the numbers its a 350 horse out of a 68 chevelle. the nob put a cam in it so big that i barly had 8hg of vacum. the guy was right it had no power down low. but boy does it ever work well up high. had that engine on the strip in the wagon, it'll run 13s easy and i tow with it,the short be smart checks berings  change seals and enjoy , you never no what you got with an old engine.

Todd; thanks for the part number for the oil pickup and screen for the B-body oil pan. I thought I would change mine just in case there were particles I couldn't see. Our dealer in Brantford, Forbes Bros., who I had dealt with for over 40 years, wanted $33 as opposed to your $26. I must admit I haven't restored a GM for many years and I knew knowone in the parts department so it was still a fair price. Your research certainly saved me fooling around trying to fabricate a new pickup to the screen. Doug.

Well, the deal on my Dodge fell through (I did get a nice deposit though!) so my garage is full of Dodge right now. The floor work should start next week and the brakes are almost done. Once that's done the car can be moved and the Pontiac can come home from storage off site. I have a potential buyer in Austria for the Dodge so we'll see what happens there..

Well, it's only been two years since I started this thread biggrin
I got my pulleys bead blasted and painted. I also got the engine cleaned up and painted. I installed a new water pump and have a new fuel pump to install. Oh, I threw in a new set of Delco plugs. it had old Motomaster V grooves in her. I'm surprised she ran! Those are the old plugs in the photos!

454001.jpg

I did a test fit of the chrome valve covers Ray and Darryl sent me. At first the baffle interfered with the rockers. I had to really "persuade" the baffles to get them to clear. I'm not sure if I should run them this way. They do look purdy though.

454003.jpg

If I use them I need to find chrome fasteners, a chrome oil filler cap and grommets.

Well, something weird is going on. I test fit the water pump pulley today and it hits the water pump housing! Any chance the hub could be pressed too far in on the shaft?
