Started work on my Acadian 327 tonight

We got the cam bearings done tonight. The other night my brother used his bearing installer to put the front 4 in. When he went to put the back one in, it just pushed right through, no resistance. I thought the hole must be oversize. I did a pile of homework and finally figured out that Sealed Power had packed the back bearing wrong in the kit. It was for position #3 or #4, not #5. Ordered a new bearing set, pulled out the bearing for #5 and voila! Pressed in like a charm.

I put the block on the stand tonight and started cleaning it up, chasing all the threads etc.

It will be mostly stock, L79 cam, 69 Z28 aluminum intake and a 600 Holley vacuum secondary that has minor tweaking. Stock exhaust manifolds though. I'm not a fan of headers on street cars.

I may have a spare pair of frame mounts. Not sure about too much else but I can check. Anything specific you need?

I haven't done up a set of stock wheels yet to put those caps onto. I have 65 GTO Rally One's on the car right now.

Nice photo,looks good.
I'd be starting from scratch.seeking out, mounts, pan, manifolds.the rest should be pretty much at hand.I'll stick with the powerglide, add a kit,and mabe a converter.rad should be good, been recored oversized.will worry about the backend later on.

I knew one of the old guys would see that!

I bet there's many of us who have used those for engine crates/stands over the years!

You must be younger than me.

I remember working in the 70's at the service station. Those wooden Coke crates were a multipurpose tool.

This is just a suggestion, why don't you hot tank all the cast iron engine parts. You must know someone who works in a diesel repair shop. Most diesel shops have large hot tanks and if you know the right person you can propably get the parts cleaned really cheap. The block must be hot tanked before installing new cam bearings. The chemical in the tank "eats" the aftermarket cam bearings.

No work on it for the next couple of days, sadly. Inventory and year end at work now. I spent 4 hours on the computer here tonight (hey, wait, that's a normal night anyway!!!) doing a bunch of paperwork- inventory stuff to help get ready. I may not be the parts manager any more but still have to help out I guess!

Oh well, 4 hours at time and a half will help nicely to pay for some 327 stuff!

Man, our son's basketball has taken over my life! I FINALLY got to work on it again tonight. I got all the oil gallery plugs in, coolant plugs in and the camshaft in. I couldn't put the crank in because I forgot to get Plastigage.

Oh well, it's progress, slow as it be...

Thanks, I like putting up the pics because if others enjoy looking at workshop shots even half as much as I do it's well worth it.

Basketball again tonight until 10 PM!!! 120 miles of poor visibility on invisible roads (covered in fresh snow) to have a senior high basketball game......

Basketball tomorrow night, basketball Thursday night, basketball Friday starting at 2 until late, commencing again at 8 on Saturday morning. Is it any wonder I can't build my engine?

But............... soon enough he will move away from home and I will miss him!

Agreed, the 327 and the car can get done in the fill in time. When I hear boys talk about how their dads almost never came to any of their games, I can hear a tiny bit of envy that our son has his dad at almost all his games. I KNOW I'm doing the right thing.

Tomorrow's game is early. I hope to come home and get the crank in and maybe some pistons too before the end of the night.

That's good stuff. That's the best time and money you will ever spend on sporting events. Watching them is way better than any pro sports unless they happen to make it to the big times which for most of us doesn't happen. Even now I have to drive 6 hours to watch one of my daughters play basketball at university. Can't do it very often but it sure is worth it when I can. Time flies by so quick and then it'll be just me and mama. Enjoy every minute Carl.

The Plastigage strips are waiting patiently in the garage just begging to get squished in between the journals and the bearings! I can hear them calling "squash me, squash me......"

Plastigage came out very nice, about .0018" and the spec is .0007" minimum and .0038 maximum" so all is good.

I forgot to bring home a ring expander so that is it for tonight.
