Hey Marty,

Cracked Distributor cap, bad wires, bad coil, vaccum leaks at carb and even the carb all come to mind. When did it start acting up?

Think positive, even if you can't drive the Custom Sport you can still go!  You should be able to see if the carb is jetting gasoline or not with the air cleaner off. A distributor cap and new wires are cheap enough to try, just my thoughts.

I thin Ray is the right track     old cars are fuel and spark    did you buy any gas in a remote spot?

Above ideas are good plus a couple more thoughts are the coil itself also if an auto trans the modulator or vacuum lines to it..

To check your fuel supply and bypass the fuel pump, disconnect the line between the pump and carb and see how it runs on fresh fuel w/ the carb fed by a gravity feed supplied from a can suspended higher than the carb..

Good luck!.

Is there a chance your timing chain could've jumped?.

maybe but i don't think its the timing chain because it starts at the first klick of the key. i'm going to try your 2 items next that you mention how can you tell if your timing chain jumped a tooth or gear?

Do you have a vacuum gauge? Put it on a good vacuum source and see what it tells you.

Sounds like ignition issues like point gap or timing? Possibly poor idle mixture screw adjustment? Or accelerator pump in the carb not functioning?

It also could be the needle valve in the carb is sticking open and flooding the carb. Any strong smell of gas (you mentioned black smoke - usually means too much fuel). Try tapping the fuel inlet area - not too hard though - to close the needle valve.

Another possiblilty if you are getting no power and backfiring is that the fuel pump is faulty and is not delivering enough fuel. Can't remember exactly but I think you need 5-8 lbs pressure. If you have 4 or less you will encounter these probelms on acceleration. This can be tested using a vacuum gauge on the fuel inlet line.

Stuck valves or valve timing problems willl also exhibit similar symptoms.

Some things to consider.
