Finally working on the 66 Cat, lil tune up, lil maintenence

Just got the car from my cousin after 15 years, got her back early winter
Finally grammas car was mine
Long story short. wanted to tune up, change gaskets
flush n fill, all the tinkering and playing I dream of and we all dream of
Here I was thinking I was going to cruize all summer with Ol Anne
Hit Crystal Beach, Lundys Lane, few other southen Ontario locals

Then POW, should have seen my face when I saw that sludge
Black Death/Mega attack of the sludge
I dont dare drive this anywear. all matching #'s
Looks like complete engine rebuild
I wish it were a 283/327 Canadian Chevy Smallblock not a 389

Moral of the story
Look at the pictures

Ouch.no

"Sludge...It's only funny when it happens to somebody else"

(A quote from the Castrol GTX sludge video)

Seriously, could you not just button it back up, change the oil and hope for the best?

Does it run well?

Runs great
you cant really see, but most the springs sit in about 1/8 inch plus of sludge
I did button her back up with some mr gasket cork rubber
gasketsm, marvel mystry oil
Going to change the oil, run her a bit when i install the back bumber
in a week or two
Really dont want to ruin the matching number block
by cruizing it with clogged artries/sp?
Motor to be pulled in april

I was thinking 10/30
and 6500 rpm in a 389 2 barrel
would be a riot for 1 run
So far, most have said run it
Im still on the fence
Its not like its a rare 421 2+2
we will see

Don't even try to REV that high w/389 they arn't meant to go like a SBC!!! A little over 5000 is tops if youv'e built it up, I have my rev limiter in distributor set for 5500!!!!. I would clean out as much sludge as you can [top side] change the oil & filter, put in some type of cleanser, do a couple of long highway drives, dump the oil, & do it again!!! You said engine coming out in April??? Is it bad or what, these US engines are not "cheap" to do, Mine was "way over " 3 grand, & I did all assembly, that was just parts & machine labour

Oh no, nothing over 5000rpm, i was just replying in jest with another on this thread
I was going to clean the sludge from the top of the cyl head, then i did not want to distrupt all that gunk, and have a blob running through to the sump
Yes, the 389 or Yankee motor is expensive, even If i do most the labor/labour
This is a numbers matching car, true survivor, did not want to throw a rod or snap the crank and ruin the block
Thats why i was enthusiastic about yanking the motor in April
I would yank the motor, but i have to much doe tied up in re chroming the rear bumber, and some other parts, convt top
I think im just going to do like you said, change the oil up a few times
and hope for the best
I waited many many years for this car, I want to drive it, cruize it around

and yes, If i redo the motor, i cant cut corners, have my eye on tri power or dual quads, figure at least 5grand us minimum

Looks like you have a US motor with dual quads in your picture
so much more to look at with those twins in there

Oh my that is cruddy but like Pete said drive it dump the oil.
Pullin the motor and going through it is the only way to get piece of mind.
The rebuild cost on any motor now is expensive but when building a performance motor with good parts its at a different level.
A stock type rebuild for a basic shortblock is generic with regards to machining.
To hot tank/bore/regrind crank/ size rods/ head work is comparable with a chevy pontiac mopar.
I am doing a stroker Pontiac (464) and the price jumps but doing any performance motor weather its a 454/455/350..... adds up.
I like the idea of two carbs on that car way cool.

When I did my 64 389 parts were a killer here in Ontario. Only place I could get pistons was "Eggies" in California!!!  Brgs & rings etc. were not a problem [only the price was] This car sat for almost 12 yrs. & broke a piston on start up!!! I think parts are more "reasonable" stateside, no $$$ exchange or brokerage fees at border. Price I quoted didn't include the "dualquads" but did include the COMP CAM & LIFTERS.

Hey dual quad

The 1966 has different choke set up, mid carb and intake rides taller
than the 65

I am dreaming as well of a dual 4 set up also
Might be easier to set the carbs up

Got to have it sort of same year
Kinda concorse, or true

Thank you kindly to all who have replied
I really appreceate ALL the comments

I hope you all get to cruize your rides soon, very soon

Till then
Pontiac dreams
