If you are thinking about rebuilding a 305 you may as well get a Vortec 305 from a 96-98 GM truck. The most expensive item you will need is an aftermarket intake manifold. These Vortec 305's make lots of horsepower and get really good fuel economy. Around here you can get a complete running Vortec 305 for around $300-500. There are a lot of benefits to these engines, roller cam and lifters, steel timing gears and they are plentiful. The weak points are the intake manifold gaskets and you will have to run an electric fuel pump as the block has no provision for a mechanical fuel pump. These engines run clean as I have seen blocks with 150,000 K's where the ridge at the top of the cylinders was so small I cut it off with a utility knife.
