This morning going to the car show in Lindsay, I was almost parked and a noise started. At idle is was a loud tick, and got exponentially worse with a little throttle. (This is a 454 LS6 crate engine.) I sure got lots of opinions on what is was, from a bad plug to a fuel pump to a bent pushrod. I decided to get my trailer and haul her home. I'm leaning to the bad pushrod diagnosis, getting someone to have a look tomorrow.
pull the fan belts off, to eliminate accessory noise, find a broken hockey stick with a pointy end , put your ear against the none pointy end and use as a stethoscope, move along the valve covers and distributor, cheap quick diagnostic to see how far you have to pull things apart.

Do you know about the trick to pinch off the fuel pump inlet hose to diagnose if that's the noise? Very very quick and easy, something you can do on your own to at least verify if that is the problem.

Well yes, I guess it does then too but the idea is to pinch the inlet hose at the pump with something like a vice grip (make sure the jaws are taped or something so it doesn't cut the hose) and if it's the pump rattling the noise should disappear.

I'm a collector...not a builder!!Located in sunny central Saskatchewan at the lakehead!
I was at work when the mechanic phoned me about the engine. He says it's in the bottom end, will have to pull the engine this week. I need to find a good engine rebuilder within an hour of Lindsay, maybe Parry Automotive in Orillia. Has anyone used them?
Call Tony and see what he says. I find his prices very reasonable too. He does warranty work for the GM dealers in Toronto. There is always half a dozen Cadillacs there getting new Northstars.

Unfortunately it was an oil problem, something that should be preventable. I had spent a lot of time replacing the oil pan gasket, as well as the valve cover gaskets. I thought I had the problem licked, should have checked it more often. It lost half the oil in 300 miles, way worse than I realized. I have no clew where all that oil went, except for undercoating the floor pan, right side. Very expensive lesson to keep a closer eye on the oil level.
Still wondering if anyone has used Parry Automotive in Orillia, they advertise doing vintage engines, know of one person that was quite happy there. I know Matt from Lindsay Driveline, he did my old 261 Pontiac engine, would likely be happy with him too.

Leo, you are right about an expensive lesson but hopefully your experience will help us all. I know when I drive my old car only 300 to 500 miles a year it is easy to ignore the oil, I mean it would take 6 year driving to get to 3,000 miles a normal change interval.
I make a habit of checking the levels weekly on my old car, usually Saturday morning and on my newly rebuilt Vortec I am very consciencious, plus changing before 5,000 km to keep warranty valid but good practice anyway.
So sorry to hear of your troubles!. Here's another suggestion for an engine builder.. Johnny Stefko has years of experience building all motors including those of many big time racers also's a great guy too!.
