RE: 65 Big Block Custom Sport

Sure sounds like it. Going from memory, around 1986, a guy I know worked out of Desro Automotive, a self serve repair shop. He was looking for advice on installing a 350 in this 1965 Pontiac. They were hacking up brackets etc. as they only had some of the 327 and some of the 350. When I saw the 4 speed and factory tach I asked him to just sell me the car and stop butchering. Most of the 327 was long gone so I bought an older GM 1/2 ton with a 396 or 402 and put that engine in. I've probably done 100's of engine swaps over the years and always try to make things look stock, not to be deceptive, I just like using factory parts. It hadn't even occured to me that 1965 Pontiacs didn't have a 396 available as I have had a few 1965 Chevy 396's. The car ran and drove nice and looked pretty good for a 20 yr old. The guy who bought it, I "think" his name was Mark Kelly, was from Wetaskiwan, so no surprise it ended up in Millet.

To add some spice to the story, a few years prior to this, I had a black, fully loaded "1965" 396 Caprice Sport Sedan that I sold to a Leo, also from Wetaskiwan!  AND, the guy who bought the Pontiac had the Caprice in his back yard minus engine, trans and steering wheel. Perhaps that one is still around your area  too!!!

If I could type better I'd tell you about the 1968 Mustang GT the guy from Desro sold me around that time.

Thanks for the up date.

Thanks
Randy

If the engine was out of a pickup it wouldn't have chrome Tonawana valve covers
and air cleaner lid. Would it? I suppose someone could have changed them along
the way though. Do you have any old records of the VIN?

The code off the right front side of the block in front of the cylinder head will tell right away if it's a pickup block or a car block. You don't happen to have that, do you?

Not on me, but it's supposed to warm up sometime this week and I'll try and get
some numbers. Lots of snow to dig .

Like I mentioned I like to use factory parts to get the look I'm after. The valve covers, air cleaner and intake used were all stock, just not necessarily what were on the truck engine, but what could have come on say a 350 hp 396. The Pontiac rally wheels are the same as the ones I put on also, not correct for 1965 but suitable in my eye. I had a basement flood about 10 yrs ago and lost most of my old records but if this isn't the car it sure is a twin!! And yes check the code, I have recoded many of my projects but forget if I did this one.

Thanks
Randy

If you're interested, the car is for sale now. He said he'd like to get $4000 for it.
He's going back to school.
PM me and I'll give you his name and phone number. I'll still try and get the
engine code for you.

Thanks for thinking of me but I'm not really interested. I've grown fond of basic cars like 2 dr. sedans with bench seat & cloumn shift like my last Strato Chief. Hopefully someone here will buy it.  it's still a very desireable convertible.

Thanks
Randy

In one of the threads here someone posted a 65 police car with the optional 396 B/B [think it was the one w/ new Caprice Police car] if that proves "right" then it was available in 65 !!!!!!

I don't recall the thread DQPete's remembering but again I'm certainly not convinced any info in this thread or anywhere else is conclusive proof of Mk1V's not being shipped in 1965 Canadian B-Body cars..
I'm still a believer and am hoping a '65 L78 Strato Post car shows up!!!
