427 for 100?

hey guys, i can get my hands on a 427 out of a gmc truck for 100, buddy claims its stuck and i have to come and remove it but it is all there and was a running motor 6 years ago.
should i jump on it for something to build or should i just wait around and grab a 350 4-bolt

The block is taller because the pistons have 4 rings on them instead of 3. If you set a car style intake manifold on there it won't sit up against the heads because the "V" is wider. Make sense?

You can buy a 454 block, buy 427 pistons and use the crank and rods from the truck engine. The rest of the truck engine is no good to you for passenger car use.

As indicated, 427 truck blocks are tall decks, meaning the distance from the center of the crankshaft to the top of the cylinder deck is higher than a normal big block.  They can easily be identified by looking at the location of the water pump compared to the top of the cylinder deck.   On a normal big block, the top edge of the water pump is pretty much right at the top of the deck.   On a tall deck, there is about a 1/4" gap between the water pump and the top of the deck.  The taller deck was used to allow for the extra piston ring.

Normal big block heads and intakes can be used on tall deck blocks, but spacers need to be utilized between the intake and heads.  I think tall deck blocks also use a longer distributor, but not 100% sure.

also, to avoid any confusion, when the term "truck block" is used, they,re referring to larger trucks, usually 2 ton and up, buses, ect. pick up trucks use a regular deck hieght. i thought i would mention this incase somebody finds a nice 427, and walks away from it, cause its in a truck. many people will also find a 366, and try to sell it as a 396, 402, 427, or 454. watch out for that. anybody that has a tall deck "truck block" usually knows its gonna be hard to get rid of, so they,ll try to pull the wool over your eyes. so just make sure you know what you,re looking at, or bring a big block guy with you. i had a buddy get stung like that.

I built up a 366 for my 53 stude coupe , wanted look  and sound of big block. Installed  new cam , aluminum water pump , intake with moroso spacers, holley carband hei dist. and headers. Had 9:1 comp and hi perf heads.about 325 hp, hooked up to a 700r4 with shift kit. Car was fast and 70 mph on hiway 28 mpg. If you find a 427  car block cheap , crank ,rods , bearings, timing chain oil pump will fit right in.  For  tall decks there is a manifold available now that does not need spacersand  you will need an adjustable dist. ($400). I machined collar off hei and made adjustable collar ,worked great. I would do it again in the right hot rod.
