leave the cover ON maybe somone can come over and HELP you
Be sure you are TDC #1 on compression stroke. Might be 180 degrees out. Still on TDC but #6 compression not #1. Four month old gas shouldn't be an issue. My car comes out of storage after six months with no gas issues and no stabilizer either. Has this engine sat for a long time - like years? Also may have stuck valves. Compression check?

What do you mean lint or mothballs coming out of the cylinders? Is it possible mice got inside the engine and it is blowing a nest out?
There should be no reason to pull the covers.
Was the engine running a year ago when you took it out?
The engine was a runner when removed. I walked Jonathan through the timing and it sounds like it should be bang on. He is only pouring fuel through the carb, no line hooked up. I would think a good charge and if there is someone near to have a look to make sure he has good spark and good temporary wiring it should fire!! Sure wish I lived closer :(
