power steering pump


will it harm a power steering pump to run it with no fluid ?

I have installed everything but the new steering box

that is on the way from down south, but do not know if i should just remove the belt

for now

Lefty, those old Acadians & Chevy IIs were linkage boost power steering setups. I don't see how you could run it with the pump and without the "rams". If you have the pump mounted, just run the car as it without the belt.

THIS POWER STEERING CONVERSION BOX IS LONGER THAN A STOCK STEERING BOX AND WILL REQUIRE THE STEERING COLUMN TO BE SHORTENED APPROXIMATELY 3" FOR CLEARANCE. I can't figure out how they attach your column to that box because your's has a solid shaft that is an internal part of your current steering box.

It looks as though you are convertying from a linkage boost system to an integral p/s setup (an improvement in my books).

I'd like to know how they fasten a smooth round shaft to that coupler at the bottom. No keyway, no splines. It makes me nervous looking at it!

Progress so far.
1. What a job to get the old "spear" box out !!
Had to remove exhaust, gas pedal linkage and kick down.
as well as stud for gas pedal and vacumn line "T"
Most of this was due to the new Dual booster brake system
The box would not clear i.

2. Was also fun to get the Pitman arm off the old one, had to go
and find a 1 5/16 socket

new steering box bolted right in and now all i have to do is cut 3"
off of the steering "sleeve"
