10 & 12 bolt


Wondering if the gear assy and axles from a 12 will fit a 10 bolt full size.   confuse

The axle's would be the same length but the axle splines would be different. 28 for 10 bolt and 30 for 12 bolt.

Correct, no interchange I'm afraid except the brake backing plates, brakes and drums.

Thanks, that's what I thought.  I have a spare 12 bolt and was thinking of changing out the 10 in it now, or using parts from it, but keeping the current ratio.  hmm

         Are you having breakage with the 10 bolt?  

        They usually can take a fair amount of abuse......

No issues with the 10, just an annoying pinion whine furious  But status quo says the 12 bolt is better so......

I don't know your powertrain but honestly, if you are running a small block automatic on stock street tires, a 10 bolt is sufficient. A 12 bolt is nothing more than bragging rights unless you have 400 hp, sticky tires, manual trans or maybe all 3 of those things!

Ya I'm sure the 10 bolt will suit me fine with a 350, mild cam and iffy 300hp. With my budget, I only putter around locally, cruise to the odd S&S and do an occasional highway blast.  Tires aren't cheap and it's doubtful the old beast could spin them ... never mind smoke em, anyway.... smile 

If it were possible to change the internals, I might have done it but I think the 12 bolt I have, has maybe 2.76's??? Anyway, don't want to go lower gears so...just as well.

Your original is likely 3.08? 2.73 is the 12 bolt ratio likely if it's in the 2's. Not likely worth the trouble of changing diffs if it isn't necessary.

I thought the original would be 3.08 also, but when rotating the wheel 2 turns, it yeilded slightly over 3.25 turns on the piniion  confuse

Well, there is a 3.36 possibility in those years on a 10 bolt also.

  If you get the axle code off of the right tube, we will be able to tell you what it originally had!!

 '65 being the same........
