rebuilding Rear End

Does anyone know of a good shop in the Surrey  Langley area

that could rebuild my factory Rear End ??

Has not be touched since 63.

Or is it hard to do yourself.

I can hear a nise from the rear when the top is up

could be just a brake/drum noise , it gets a bit loader when i apply brakes.

Thanks

How do i tell if the rear end in my car has Standard rear axles or a positraction rear axles ??
the manual calls for different fluids
standard S.A.E. 80 pass car duty Hypoid (lead soap active Sulphur type)
Positraction S.A.E. 80 lead soap Sulphur Sapanifiable chlorine "SCL" Multi-Purpose Gear Lubricant

I don't want to use the wrong stuff
Thanks

Either check the axle code or jack up the rear of the car and spin the wheels. If your posi is decent and the tranny in park, you will not be able to turn them.(only if the posi is worn out)

If it is an open axle, non posi, one tire will spin in reverse of the other. The best way if you are not entirely sure is to pull the cover and inspect. A non posi will have just a pin in the middle and if it is a posi, there will be a spring in the middle with then pin.. Plus clutches behind either side gear...

The last resort, do a burn out down the street and if it is a posi, there will be 2 strips of rubber verus 1 strip for a non posi!!!! (lol)

Do a burn !! would love that !! only way i can do a burn is to go really fast and hit the brakes..
One tire spins in the opposite of the other i did not think it was a posi..
thanks

You need to remove the rear cover to drain the diff. Then reseal the cover with a gasket or silicone. I like silicone myself.

there in lies the problem, there is no rear cover on these diff's.
Manual says lubricant should only be drained when the differential carrier assembly is
removed. I do not think i have the special tools to do that.

I wasn't sure if that was your design or not! What I did with my '70, I used a suction gun through the fill hole and did it that way... It worked well enough for me!!

On some of those removable carrier diffs you could remove one of the bottom bolts and drain. If you aren't rushed, let it drain overnight for it's not a big hole. Easier than trying to suck up gear oil.

went for a drive with some one else driving and i think the noise is coming from either the EM brake cable dragging or something else in the brakes
I changed out as much of the fluid as i could by pump, boy was it ever black and smelly !!
taking out a couple of the bottom bolts sounds like a good idea, i will take it for a drive to get the new fluid pumping and then drain it again

Does the noise change on coast and acceleration? Whine, growl, scrape, knock...etc?

Tick?? Almost sounds like the park brake cable return spring hitting the heads of the studs inside the drum....?

If there is no whine or growl, then the diff gears sound fine to me! Yes, set it in gear on the stands, be careful, and listen. Also, if you get time, remove the drums and inspect for metal contact of the park brake return spring and the stud heads....

One other option, although it's a longshot is a bad wheel bearing. I once saw a late 60's Vista Cruiser that had a bad bearing. I think one of the rollers had broken apart or something. Anyway, at slow speeds it had a rhythmic click, click, click to it. When the axle was pulled out, the bearing fell apart.

Never had that..... But I did have a bad pinion bearing in a '02 GMT 800 truck that the noise was so bad I was going to look for a complete diff to replace it... It made a snapping noise too!  And, come to think of it, it was more noisy on a quick deaccel...

When I had the carrier out of it, you could feel it in the pinion "bump" when you turned it by itself!

Thanks for jogging my memory by bringing up bearings...

tried to remove one of the bottom bolts, but they are nuts so i will pump it out after i run it for a while,
the first pump out got most of it out..
but later in the year i will pull it out and get a shop to replace all the bearings just to be safe..
