If nobody has been there before you will need to remove the inner fender to get at the top inside bolt that holds the core box to firewall.

Also,good luck finding a replacement core in the same size.
Try sourcing one from a 64 US Pontiac as the Impala ones are way too small.

The new ones they sell are cheap Mexican junk (at least that's what they look like)
Mine was leaking at the inlet pipe & I just soldered it myself.

mine leaked inside but it was the NOS style tower clamps leaking

I threw them away and put real clamps on

Thats great news THANKS...I can remove the inner fender well..just the thought of removing the outer fender gives me a headache.

I also recently changed the heater core on my 63 (with AC) without removing the fender. As Anytime says, you should be able to locate the speed nuts on the firewall side by feeling around, and I was able to get a box-end wrench on all of them to get them started. Once you have all the nuts off, you can pull the heater box off from inside the car, and change the core. I replaced the seals around the box at the same time. They are available from most of the restoration parts suppliers. 1963 Impala SS - 327/300 HP

More good news..I got a BRAND NEW heater core from CARQUEST in Oshawa. ...ordered it on Thursday and got it Friday.

Once all the Christmas festivities are over , I will share the part number with everyone

While it is easier to get the outer heater box nuts off with the inter fender off, It's not necessary. It can be done with the inter fender on.

Reach in over the top of the inter-fender and feel for the nuts of the firewall. You can can a small socket on the nut and get off. Try it first before you take off the fender. If you can get it off, you are home free with the rest.

Carl..the news just keeps getting better..yep me too I'm 6'4" an have big hands as well...BUT I have my son who isn't as big as the 'ol man yet..so he will get the task. I have a cool set of 1/4 drive sockets with a flexible extension etc..so that might do it. Gunna tackle this task this week so I'll let you know what happens

you'd have a better place to stand, and "reach around"

Carl..SUCCESS...just removed all the bolts on the fender inner well. Removed battery tray and jiggled the fender inner and it fell down.

Lots of room now to get a both bolts around fan motor. THANKS to all you fellows who responded with the info to make this task easier.
