We had a winter like this (but with a bit of snow) about 10 years ago. I bought a 94 Impala SS wreck on December 20th. I had no indoor spot for it so I spent most of January and early February stripping it outside my garage. Most nights it was melting or close to it. I think that would have been Jan 02.

The torque of those engines is nearly identical with the 340 horse producing 420 @ 3200 and the 400 horse is 425 @ 3600.

Quick story here from a while ago. A friend of mine years ago purchased a 1960 tuxedo black Bel Air 2-door for $350.00 in 1970. It had the standard 348 250HP/ 3speed column shift with overdrive.  He was a broke college kid attending UCLA in Los Angeles who needed cheap transportation he told me and found the '60 behind Felix Chevrolet in cheap transportation.  He took care and had fun with the '60 though used to get beat by his classmates GTO's, Mustangs and Road runners often. The 348 started knocking after a few months and he went to a wrecking yard in Van Nuys CA and found a 348 missing valve covers and air cleaner w/4barrel as a solid runner for $75.00. He installed it with a new clutch and put his valve covers and air cleaner on it from his old 348. Right away he noticed a tremendous power difference. He got on the 101 freeway on ramp and stood on it where the '60 blew the tires off and got sideways.  Later that weekend he started taking out his friends GTO and mustang and a SS 396 chevelle one by one. He sold the bel air in 1975 after graduation to a college freshmen for $300.00 and purchased a year old Pontiac Can Am with 4 speed from Salta Pontiac in Long Beach CA.

In 1992 he ran into the guy he sold the '60 to at a company convention in Quebec City where the guy lived now. My friend found out in short order the 348 he purchased from the wrecking yard was a 1963 409 340HP engine!  The guy that bought it found out after it was a 409 after he sold the Belair to another owner for a parts car (it rusted out in the tough Quebec winters) when the last owner noticed the oil pan dipstick was on the opposite of a 348.  Long story, though just wanted to share it with you.
