283, 327 or 350?


Having a hard time finding my engine codes. My car is a 1968 Parisienne 2+2 with a 327 (apparently). I dont think the engine is original, could get lucky though. Could anyone forward me to a website for older sbc casting decoding or know what I have. Numbers listed below. Thanks guys!

Likely a 3970010 which is usually a 350 but because it's a 4" bore I think it can also be a 327. Pretty safe to say that it's not the orginal engine though as I think the 3970010 only started in 69.

The second (3) from the right in the 131471295 is for 1973, the CKL is 350, and the K is for Catherines Ontario. If it was a 1975 it would be a 262 V-8. The 3910010 block is super common. Paul.

I just checked that nastyz28.com site and according to it, I'm wrong. It says there is a 3970010 327 block in 1968. I've learned something new again.

Paul, I don't think there is a 3910010 casting is there?

My mistake, sorry for the confusion boys, 397 are the first digits. Would that make her a 327?

Sorry I looked it up as a 397 even if I wrote as a 391, My Bad, that motor suffix only comes up as a 350 or 262 and the (3) is the dead give away as a 1973 350. As for it being a earlier block to make it a 327 I thought only the part number on the crank gave you that info but you could be right Carl, it would make sense the early introduction of that block would be a 327. Paul.

Info from the chevy by the numbers book shows 3970010 block production started in late april and early march of 69 so not so sure about 68. It shows only used as a 350 and 302.

Looks like its a 327 from more web searching. 3970010 post 1969 production numbers seem to all add up to a 350 out of a 74 truck. However a few people have stated (google search through various chevy forums) that pre 1969 Casting numbers show a 327 for 68 with casting 3970010. Not gonna put too much faith into it until I am ready to open up the engine. According to the seller the engine was rebuilt and replaced, again doesn't mean much, but for street cred reasons its a 327 to me ;). All the parts I bought for it fit and work so chances are its a 327, but probably not the original. Let me know if I am full of it and Thanks for all your help and info guys! Much appreciated!

As noted above you have a 1973 350, the ckl suffix is the dead give away.

don't 1968 model year blocks still have a road draft tube?   That would be clearly visible on the block, as well as the beer can size thing it connects to under the intake, at the back of the lifter valley.

I think 67 was the end of that Clint but we'll see if someone chimes in with pictures of 68 that say otherwise.

The boss is still there but not drilled out for the fitting on any 68 block I've ever seen. They started breathing out the valve cover that year. I've been wrong before though.

 Nothing wrong with it so far as I can tell. I just would eventually like the engine to match the badges rather than remove them. Just my personal preference.

Shawn,  you car would not have 327 call outs.  Pontiacs just had the "V8" emblems on the front fenders for 67
