GEAR RATIO

Hi brand new member and I have couple of questions I need help with first. Gear ratio 1 full rotation of the wheel and 1 and half on the drive shaft does anyone that value. Should I weld up the rear carrier to get posi and put in 373 gears to kept the cost down for now it is a 12 bolt rear end. The 2spd powerglide would it be good on a 350 with about500hp  And dont worry the virgin 327 is going in the front corner of the garage and stays with the car no matter what happens the her.

would be easier to count the teeth of the pinion and crown.. or.. see if it's stamped on the crown.
wouldn't advise welding her up either.. unless you plan on trailer to strip only.

and... Welcome to the site

Welcome from another winnipeger, First, you would need to turn the driveshaft to get an accurate guesstimate to axel ratio. As turning the tire will turn the spider gears which will cut the ratio. This applies to open differentials. With a posi the tires will turn together, giving you a more accurate guess. As for welding the spider,NO NO NO, drivability on the street would be impossible. try calling Asperline transmission and differential, and see if the have a posi carrier, they may even have a good gear set for you. Spent money wisely now or repair and cuss later" usuallyon the side of the road".

NON posi diff.  sounds like a 3.08 ratio.

I do it with the car in neutral , one wheel up , rotate the tire 2X, and count how many times the driveshaft spins.  Gets you real close this way.

Tks for the info on the gears I will be taking it apart on wed then I will know what i am dealing with. Will give Asperline a call and also r and r trans. We only welded the gears of an old derby car and it worked for that but you also her a lot of people talk about it. drive or push a pontiac is better then doing anything else. What about the powerglide the final will be a posi and about 373 gears and heavy duty u joint for summit or jegs and 350 500hp. some say that would be a good way and some say th400 but it is a console so it would be harder to get the linkage of the th400 to line up. Because of the shifter has only the two spots on it ( or just go with a 4spd )

Take a look at this thread..... It will possibly help in your situation......

And no, now welding unless you want to go in a straight line for the rest of it's life! You need a "limited amount of slip" to be able to corner!

500 HP  small block and Powerglide or 400?

I presume you are building a 4200lb race car???

      if not  biggrin

try 350HP with glide and 3.08's and have enough money for gas  wink

I think there may be a company that makes a conversion to make your shifter correct with a TH400.

Carl, my car originally came with a TH400 but has drive low1 low2 for the gear selector...so I don't think the shifter will be an issue

I was looking a radaitors a lot of the ones on ebay look too good to be true does any one have one of these or do you know where is a good company. The ones from summit look not to bad and they come from a good company. The rear end I am going with a auburn or eaton limited slip and 373 gears that should make the old lady get up of the line and shock a few people lets hope
