Spark Plug wires for 283 with headers


On my 64, with headers on the small block. I used Accel wires  for a 70 corvette. 90 degree boot and a little longer than stock wires. Never had melting or clearance issues. The longer wires permitted the wires to go under the header pipes and up the fire wall.

Has anyone had success with spark plug wires for their headers.    I bought the short plugs that Performance Improvents has and they sold me a "sock" to go over the boot at the cylinder head.   Was supposed to be the trick set up as the longer spark problems were burning up the boots.

I haven't gotten under the hood yet but the misfiring indicates the old problem is back again.   Will have some time at Autofest to scope this out for sure. 

Long plugs, short plugs...  trick wire sets.... 

Any success stories?

Cliff, was it Perf.Imp, Oshawa?? I've had some "not so" good experiences with them!!!! I now deal with Cory at Karbelt in south end of Osh. Knows his stuff & better prices than "up the street" Got tired of bending over with "no LUBE'!!!

i made my own plug wires with a universal set of taylor wires. i had a 283 with an hei and wanted my own configuration for wires. plug wire crimper wasn't that much.

Cliff, on my sbc, I just have my bargain basement wires come down across the valve cover and use spacers to keep them positioned. No trouble so far... with coated headers.

Also, it's my understanding that uncoated headers will actually get very hot at the bends at the heads. Actually begin to glow like a radiant tube at sustained high RPM. Tough for any plug wire to survive in this environment.

I use Ceramic Spark Plug Wire boots they withstand up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit!

If I am not mistaken I bought the Taylor wires to match my name.. Cliff Taylor lol also because they were a blue colour.......

Thanks for the offers to check it out and also some good suggestions. I will try to get there before 10.00 am, probably around 9.30 Will park for a while in the trunk sale area just inside the park. Have some disc brake rotors that I would like to unload.

Mark:  The headers were ceramic coated after purchase.   See my other post in the Autofest report today. No burnt wires

On my 83 S10 with 350 V8   I had the same problem  

I bought A/C Delco wires for HEI

 I added the "socks" from Car Quest  

and they work GREAT  

 

truck runs like a new truck

As Mark said a while back, he has the ceramic coating and no problem. I have the same ceramic hugger headers with the boots and have had no problems. They have been on the engine for three years. The non ceramic headers as some pointed out do run very hot. I remember my son doing a run in on a new engine and the painted headers got so hot that they were red and you could see the exhaust exiting the tubes. They were in the 400 C range on the thermometer that he had.
