no part throttle shift for 2 speed powerfulglide


hi guys looking for more help

car is a 1967 pontiac parisienne cv 327 2speed auto 12 bolt (actually a 350 now someone changed it along the way)(still has originnal carb and intake)

the only way to get into 2nd gear (or final drive) is to run the car up to 50+ mph then get my shift

after that i can cruise as low as 30 mph or so before it shifts back to 1st

I have changed fluid and filter in the trans

I have hooked up a vacume gun at the modulator and it holds vacume

does not puff blue smoke at shifts

do these modulaters go bad?

any ideas ?

Could it be the kickdown needs adjusted?

What happens if you set it in "idle" mode at the trans with the kickdown unhooked and go for a ride. I am just guessing but I am thinking you should have an early but mushy shift.

yup.. need to adjust the kick down linkage..

if some one changed engines. good chance they did not set the linkage up , or have the wrong geometry, if not the original carb .

Carl Yes when the linkage is unhooked it shifts at 20mph I thought I set it up properly but most likely I haven't I suspect I need to lengthen the actuall rod that is connected to the carb This rod has been modified by someone in the cars past It's welded together No sure if the length is right? Looks correct but that doesn't mean it is

glides also have a second adjustment on the side of the tranny, look in your shop manuel for adjustment, its a little envolved but it smartens things up

Think I remember my old PG shifting at around 20mph, with cable hooked up correctly as far as I know.

I'm no expert on powerful glides but I think from what I'm hearing they should do a part throttle shift at around 30-35 mph

The initial kickdown rod adjustment is, with the carb wide open, the carb linkage should be pulling the kick down rod as far forward as possible, this pushes the transmission lever as far as it can go. This gives maximum kickdown and longest transmission life. The modulator can be adjusted to set the 1-2 shift speed an normal throttle openings. Set the kickdown linkage before operating on the modulator.

Yes I have set the kickdown as u explained

My wife held the throtlle to the floor and I adjusted the rod to pull the kickdown on the tranny as far forward as possible without bending things

so what is my next step?

because at this point there is still no part throttle shift 

only a balls out reving shift at 50 to 55 mph

how do you adjust the modulater?

I read up on the band adjustment that sounds like were onto something

im not sure what to do next?

The carb pulls the rod forward but the bell crank pushes the trans. lever back. When you let up un the gas, the lever on the trans. should spring forward. Also, there should be a small spring on the linkage to hold it forward on the carb.
Stay away from the band, you have to get the kick down linkage straight first.

you are correct Randy

the bell crank pushes the tranny lever back

I was visualizing it wrong

the spring is there as well

so does a powerfulglide (thats working properly)shift on its own at 30mph while using gentle acceleration?

or is it up to the driver to let off when the revs get up 

letting the trans lever move forward and then the trans will shift into high?

When you started out I think you had a very early shift, correct?? Now that you have adjusted the kickdown to max. you have a late shift. If so, now you back off on the adjustment to get a satisfactory shift. With the throttle at wide open, adjust the linkage so it doesn't push so much on the trans lever. Adjust it a bit at a time to see if you can find the sweet spot. I think you said some of the linkage was welded or homemade, so make sure it's not binding etc. It should move freely. Your getting close!!

Right, you shouldn't have to let up on the gas to shift when everything is correct. Depending on how far down you are pressing the gas will have an effect on shift speed. Normal driving, the shift will be at approx. 20 mph, foot to the floor, approx. 60 mph.
It can be tuned to just how you like it. When cruising along in high, then flooring it, it should down shift, or kick down to low as high as approx. 45 mph.

Modulator line is hooked up to a good vacuum source, correct? Normally in a fitting at the back of the intake manifold.

I just looked at your carb thread and noticed you have the small kick down spring installed back wards. It should go from the linkage to small hole in the coil bracket. The linkage is spring loaded rearwards and the carb pulls it forward. You have so many threads going on about the same stuff it's getting confusing. Perhaps you should start to include pictures as you go so we can all stay on the same page!!

No problem!! Keep at it and hopefully we will get it working to your satisfaction, it's sometimes hard to figure out what previous owners have done and why.

Happy Guy right here!!!

The car is Shifting just as if it came off the assembley line!!!!!

I think the main trouble was Me having the small kickdown spring pulling the wrong way

Thanks for looking at my pics from  the other thread I had going and realizing the spring was set up backwards!

I have a buddy with a bel air 2 speed and his kickdown is missing parts and wired in place

now I think I have enough knowledge to help him out.
