You have to be "very specific" with these young guys on the parts counters

I gave up

I look up the parts numbers on Line

print it off and take it in to Car Quest       The manager there (great guy) was born in 1990

For common small block V-8 Chevy parts i would not waste my time with any local jobbers. ECKLER'S, SUMMIT and Ebay has everything you need and for a reasonable price, although the exchange rate now really sucks. Parts are always in stock, they are the correct parts, the staff at SUMMIT and ECKLER'S know there stuff and you get your parts in a few short days. Just be sure to tell them that you do not want the items to be shipped UPS, that you just want regular surface shipping. It always makes sense to buy the whole kit because it will be far cheaper (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) I won't say points and condenser because points and condenser are for the birds. Put a PERTRONIX electronic conversion in there instead, you will never regret it. Both SUMMIT and ECKLER'S have excellent web sites. Cheers. George.

Sadly GM dealers are generally out to lunch, when it comes to service and cost. They have way too much expensive over head to be able to compete with companies like SUMMIT.

For my old Pontiac I always check with City Buick Cadillac GMC first. You'd be surprised what they still have or can get. OEM quailty still the best. As for cost I always get 15 percent off because after purchasing so many Cadillacs and GMC there that's my loyalty rate. Only use GM parts in Cadillacs. George is right on Sumitt though. Good quality and prices with knowledgeable staff. I. Stay away from Ames and PY it's. Just too much of a hassle explaining what an Oshawa built Pontiac is.

A guy at NAPA in Charlottetown had no problem finding/ordering me many, many 283 parts ... of course his seller name printed on the receipts is Mad Dog. I always trust a guy named Mad Dog!biggrin

Often true, but not always.

You just need to find a GM parts guy who is also a car nut. I know that is getting rarer all the time, but typically a parts guy who is a car guy will work to get your old car parts business, including working to make the price attractive.

And if you end up in a jobber store for ignition stuff, be careful you don't get cheap junk. I've seem some pretty awful imported junk for distributors. Rotors that are paper thin, points with contacts that don't line up etc.

And speaking of points, it appears George's experience and mine are certainly different. I've run points in pretty much every old car I've ever driven and I don't ever recall an issue with a point set or condenser as far as them failing on me on the road.

Hmm, not sure what you did different but I picked 1967, then Chevrolet, then Caprice, then 4.6L (283) and it gave me numbers and pictures for cap, rotor, condenser and points. confuse

I often use exactly that site at work for parts lookup if it's something that's not in my computer (too old a listing, computer goes back to 1976)

Did it again....... I picked 1963....found it doesn't work with anything that is 1964 or older.....just Volkswagen comes up.

As far as ignition, yes, identical. I think even the plug wires would be the same all the way through to 70. Rams horn manifolds on all of them.

... but different style ram's horns on some (e.g. choke tube, driver's side outlet angle) but will still bolt on.
