Speedo drive gear TH400

Has anybody removed a steel speedo drive gear from the output shaft of a TH400? I am having a hell of a time! I am using a puller, but it ain't budging.

Thanks...Jim

If I recall correctly, there is a spring clip that holds it in place. You should just need to push the clip down and the gear is supposed to slide off.

If it's the same as TH350 and Powerglide, it looks like this.

The tab pointing towards you (sort of) in the picture fits down into the tailshaft. The upturned part of the other side of the clip prevents the gear from sliding.

I hope that means yes!

It's working for me here at least.

Every so often my links show up double like that and take you back to the original page for some reason.

Yeah that is for the plastic gear, the metal gear is pressed on and doesn't have that clip. I did eventually get it off, but my replacement is the wrong size so they are shipping me the correct one.

I've learned something again.

Is there a shoulder on the shaft, or how do you press the gear to the correct spot?

Stick the output shaft in the case with the appropriate washers for proper depth, look through the speedo driven gear hole and you will see a shiny spot where thedriven gear has hit a few times in its travels which should be very close to centered in the bore. Mark the output shaft straight up from there and you will be very close (that would be the center of the drive gear you will be pressing on).
