My distributor wont come out...

Hey guys, I am trying to pull my distributor, so I can pull my heads. Is this not a simple as removing the hold down and pulling it out? It come up about 1/4 in then stops. I have sprayed wd40 many times and worked it up and down. My intake is even loose. Am I missing something? its a 327 SBC. it does have petronixs.

  Thanks Dale

Got it! I put the battery back in and just bumped the engine over a tough and it came up further, with some wiggling and jiggling she came out.

Glad you got it. I have not always been successful. I've had to ruin one or two on old engines I got. Great work!

No I didnt, for a few reasons. When I did compression test, plugs and wires, I noticed the #1 on the distributor is facing cyl #2. So all my wires are one spot clockwise from what is considered "normal" So I want to drop the distributor in, in the postion like pictured below. I have never done this on a car. I have done lots of work like this on the big 12 cyl 7042 ci Waukeshaw engines in gas processing plants. Funny it seems more overwhelming to me then when I worked on the big engines. Another reason is just for the experience, my son has never done this, so we want to go through the whole process.

You may have to rotate your oil pump drive to get the distributor to sit down all the way. Can use a long screwdriver or bump the distibutor 1 tooth at a time to rotote pump drive.

I hate to tell ya, but that drawing isn't correct for your late 60s car. Note the absence of the vacuum advance and the 4 cap hold down screws.  #1 wire should go in where #8 is labelled, just between the vacuum advance and the window where your points are adjusted.

The image on the left of both of your attachments is correct for your application.   Realistically it doesn't matter, as long as the rotor is pointing to the right plug wire at the right time, but may as well be correct.
