Flywheel for my 68 2+2 with a 396


Hi guys,

I recently pulled my starter to rebuild it and was told I needed a new flywheel, as there are sections of teeth that are really worn out.
Explains why every once in awhile the starter doesn't engage properly and the starter makes a horrible scream.
Of course, this always happens at a car show or cruise night.

Anyway, in my search for a new flywheel, I'm getting conflicting information. My old parts book says part # 3991403.
Evidently that is obsolete and I've been quoted part # 340296  and  part # 471598.

Some of these are specific for mid-70s corvettes, but are said to work for other late 60's Chevy's.

Anybody have any experience with this, or know of a specific part # that works ?

Are you after only GM, or are you ok with an aftermarket part number? If so, any auto supply store selling ATP can sell you a Z121 that should be identical.

Just make sure you don't get one that is weighted (as in from a 400 small block, or a 454.)

Hi Carl,

I'm not too stuck on just GNM.

However, when I looked at the ATP site, the cross-reference suggests the heavy-duty Z460.

Any thoughts on that ?

A heavy duty version would be great if a store has it available. They're likely all Chinese made, so the heavier duty it is, the better.

3991403 is superseded by 340296 which in turn changes up to 471598, Available from GM , $120.00, this is for a 1968 396 TH400 Actually fits all TH400 68-69 plus other years 350 etc.

Are you looking for a flywheel for a standard shift car, or a flexplate for an automatic shift car?   If a flywheel, I'd suggest going with an aftermarket Hays unit.   If a flexplate, any auto parts store should be able to set you up.

Also, what size is it?  153 tooth (12.85" OD), or 168 tooth (14" OD)?

Good points, I assumed original 168 tooth as all big blocks were. No big blocks were made with the small flywheel/flexplate. Also assumed automatic because I remember seeing interior shots of his car with an A/T.

Hi guys,

 

It is an automatic and it's the 168 tooth, 14 inch.

Had some luck. The garage I'm getting the work done at, found an aftermarket (TRW) heavy-duty unit
and I found a NOS (part # 340296) that will be here next week. Between these 2, I think I'm golden.
