PCV


well, it has come to my attention I do not have a PCV fitted to my bigblock. Forgot about it! Considering all the plumbing I have done one would think I would have catered for it....hmmmm...question is, is a big block PCV different to a small block PVC or are they all the same? also PCV on one bank and breather on the other. Next question, best to connect breather to filter housing underside or just a push in breather cap? Thank in advance!

I can share some of my own PCV experiences that hopefully will help a bit. (long winded, as always though....)

I've worked at at GM dealer since 1980. Early on in my career there, I substituted a valve from one application to another because we were out of the part number that GM called for. In this case, it was only a lowly Chevette, and the part looked identical as far as the fit. However, even though many people will call BS on this, the car immediately became an oil burner, and I mean serious oil burner. So, with that said, I would get a valve as close as you can to what your application is.

Second, make sure you have a baffle inside the valve cover where you are drawing the crankcase fumes from.

Third, I don't know that it matters if you have the breather in the filter housing or the opposing valve cover because I assume you would run the hose from the housing to the cover anyway?

Carl is right if there is no baffle in the valve cover the PCV will suck oil back to your Carb.

Phillip, the current PCV wisdom on the BBC is to use the AC Delco 6487779 Valve. It is generally well suited for a good running BB with the normal amount of blowby, and a reasonable amount of inches of vacuum. Here in Ontario, the omission of a stock appearing PCV system can cause grief if we get pulled over for a look see. So my thought is to keep the system at least looking proper as it could help with a pass. But the bottom line is for the health of a street engine, a proper working system is essential.

I have the said valve installed in my 496, although not street run, it seemed to function well on the test stand, caused no idling issues, loss of vacuum and didn't pulse or rattle.

I'm running baffled Gen Style valve covers (think ZZ502) on a Mark Block. Taking the fresh supply from the breather base, and feeding in to the carb baseplate on the PCV side. My thinking is that the elbow and hose to the breather offers just a little more restriction than a element in valve cover offers alone, and it should keep the engine a little cleaner on the outside than an open element would (oil vapor).

The Valve, elbows, grommets and hoses should all be available at any good auto supply house.

And one thing that I thought of when I read your post Mark. Phillip, make sure you use proper hose, not just fuel hose for the valve. Fuel hose will eventually suck flat, it's not made for vacuum.

As they say, ask me how I know. One of those things I learned when I was 16-17 on one of my first engine builds.

Thanks guys, looks like I'm up for some tinkering! I appreciate your comments and advice. you would think I would have noticed with the grommets in the covers when I put them on...still would not mind a factory set with internal drippers though....

hey Mark, I am in queensland, australia. The fuzz usually leave us old guys in souped up old cars alone if we're not stupid!

I've heard that if you don't display a 671 or a tunnel ram in a big classic you'll be pulled over down under. Is this true Phil?

Ah ..yea...obviously the standard PCV setup won't work in your case, lol!

 Actually depends on which state you are in. In most states they are not a problem as long as you are not an idiot. Had a mate with a 64 belair which had huge rear tyres, a nasty 427 with nitrous (which is illegal on the street) and sounded like a jet plane landing in your driveway and never got hassled. Drove real cool, used the beast when no threat about.

sold the car on to a guy who then went mental on the street with it. Ended up getting pinched by the boys in blue many times and ended up getting taken off the road for it a number of times. Sadly ended up lunching the motor when he mucked about with the air cleaner setup and a nut went into the engine. What a waste.

 I am using an edelbrock proflo from mid to late 90s. Got it pretty cheap. Utilises a magnetti marelli controller. Installed the injector bungs into a tunnellram down at the ports. Installed an aeromotive phantom in tank fuel injection pump. Excellent product that one. Saved a lot of mucking about with the fuel system as it requires a return line back to the tank. Twin throttle bodies mounted to the top of the tunnel ram where the carbs would be bolted on.

Hey george, thanks for the compliment! I have spent a lot of time on the motor. Most of that fabricating the intake and installing the fuel injection. I have been a bit of a slack ass and not made a specific thread. Bits all over the shop on CP!

When I get a chance I will start a thread and chuck up a couple of pics! About to start some bodywork...

I will start a build thread on the weekend and start with some pics and info on what I did with the setup. the small 1/8 pipework is actually for show not go more than anything. Its used to pickup vacuum around the place.
