Driveshaft questions

Guys,

I'm hoping to upgrade my driveshaft during the BB conversion.

Is there anywhere local to me (GTA) that you could recommend for a new one? I'll have the old one to measure. Is this a part I'm better off ordering from a top name?

I'm thinking of just a good DOM chromoly piece,

Also, can I get a universal in a 1350 and 1310 in the same part? I'm doing a 1350 transmission yoke, but unfortunately my diff is 1310 and I'm not messing with it by changing it to a 1350. I think it'll be fine as I'll never get traction anyways.

Cheers and thanks,

Mark

If you want to stay original, I probably have both a driveshaft and a diff yoke for you. When I swapped the 454/turbo 400 into my 70 convertible, I over looked this part of the conversion. So once I figured out what I needed, to be on the safe side, I got spares in case I ever did a similar swap again.

go with the 1350 on the diff, my smallblock truck broke 2 1310 on the diff before I switched the front for some strange reason was a 1350 never had a problem with it, the 409 wagon runs two 1350s

Mark, if you decide to go with a completly new drive shaft, i very highly recommend PAT'S DRIVE LINE in Mississauga, Ontario. They do transport truck drive shafts all day long. There number is 1-877 438-3155. They did the drive shaft on my 57 Pontiac five years ago. I find looking for used drive shafts is usually futile. The used ones with worn out yokes are as bad as your original. In my case both my yoke bores were so worn out that you could spin the u joint cups in the bores. Pat's makes a complete new drive shaft with new tube, new yokes, new u joints and a "proper" balancing. Good luck and cheers. George

Clint, George, yes it'll be all new. I'll try Pats on your recommendation George. And 65, you are probably right... I should just change the pinion yoke now. The reason I'm reluctant is that even with a non crush super spacer, it's still tough to get the same pinion bearing preload. Hmm...

Cheers and thanks guys.

There's also a place on Dixie Rd just north of the 401 that I've used a couple of times. Once for the motorhome and once for my 94 pickup. Took it in early morning and picked it up later in the day. Can look up the name if you still need it.

with the looseness of my diff I just torgued it a little harder, towed like that for two more years before the tranny went out , but you are right when I rebuild it super spacer all the way, im farely hard on parts.

Bought a new Inland Empire forged 1350 yoke today. Will hope for the best when tightening it. Bought a new metal lock nut for it, and will use red Loctite.

Shame they don't come with the dust shield. Anyway that you can get the old one onto the new?

Just a note on pats driveline. I don't recommend. Had them do the drive shaft in my impala. Came highly recommended so went with them. Had a vibration before going to them. Still had a vibration replaced mounts rear end gears and transmission rebuilt and still had the vibration. Took the driveshaft back less then 1500 miles later to pats and didn't say anything about them doing it. They checked it and said whoever I had do it should not be doing driveshafts. I told them it was them and they denied it bill of sale or not they refused to help me. I went to another fellow. I can remember his name but he had since retired. He did an amazing job fixing it. No more vibration.

My Pontiac was done by mascot truck in Brampton. Somewhere near the big mandarin resturant. No complaints there. Was quick too.

I'm kind of curious about Denny's in NY, but man, it would be be pricey all in from them.

But I could sneak it across with on a grocery run, put it down my pant leg.. they'd never notice lol!

There are also options to do a custom ordered through Summit. Buddy did a 3" Chromoly 1350 both ends last year, I think from Strange. Took about 2 weeks and was about $600 CDN.

I thought of grinding out the old one or locating the larger shield, the four letter word fords used to run them but I haven't gone poking around for one , I just left it off , it was a emergency repair.
