454 intake question...


Changing out a factory iron intake for an aluminum.....Do the bolts require a sealer....or just never-sieze?

I assume this in on a small block? If so, no sealer as none of them go into cooolant, and personally I've always just put them in dry after nicely cleaning the threads---never had an issue.

Whoops, just read the text, not the header.

Had a Doug moment......!

Still the same answer though, the bolts are dry from what I've ever seen.

I was let's just say, a bit lazy, never read the header, just the text in your post. I figured it was on a stock 64 Pontiac. Clicked on the link, read the text, replied with what I thought was a proper answer, screwed it up, got my spanking, moved on...

yup, just put them in dry and follow the proper torque sequence.

Ok,thanks......I'm used to working on Pontiac V-8's.....

On a small block Chevrolet.....the head bolts require thread sealer....but intake bolts don't?

On small & big block Chevrolet's, the head bolts require thread sealer as some of the bolts go through the deck of the block and into the water passages.     The intake bolts just go into the head.  As such, no thread sealer required on the intake bolts.

For head bolts? You're going to get many answers I am betting.

I grew up using K&W Copper Coat and it's all I've ever used. I've never had a head bolt leak coolant yet.

I'm finding this thread has become quite confusing. The question was whether the intake bolts for a 454 engine require thread sealer.

A number of us have replied that NO thread sealer is required on the intake bolts for a 454 engine.

Then the question comes up as to "what is the preferred sealer".

While on the subject....with all the experts tuned in.....What is the preferred sealant....for cylinder head bolts....big block OR small block...?

I see Carl's choice is K & W copper seal...

Thread sealer for SBC & BBC cylinder head bolts, go with Permatex 80632 Thread Sealant with PTFE - 4 oz bottle.
