RE: whiskers?

I'm a big believer in using the GM parts book for problems like this one. it appears once again that the GM parts book is 100% accurate according to this eBay auction. The aftermarket seems to have a problem with these heater cores but GM appears to have it right.

Otus I hope you don't mind that I put the information from the other thread into this thread so there wouldn't be two going about the heater core.

Higuys...Carl,no prob moving post. I wasn't sure because I had the whisker thing going as well so I figured I should isolate this....Pontiacanada, I think the cores are measured minus the tanks. That's how I measured mine and they match up at 10&3/4......I have not come across any measured tank end to tank end, neither could I find one measuring 12&1/2.....

There is no doubt in my mind you need the core in the eBay auction. Just a matter of finding one that is affordable. That one is not cheap.

Made a decision ...sending my core in for assessment via local parts store...to a rad shop in Vanc. "They say they" still do brass/copper heater cores. Did not get name of rad shop but listened to phone conv.Rough quote at $300.00. My tanks look greatso maybe less. We'll see...I'll post further on...

post update...Had my heater core sent out and repaired...cost 300.00 cad. It's a match for a deluxe heater which matches the cadillacs of the day. I ordered a repops set of "Parisienne" whiskers from Brian at R.P.M in Saskatoon. They took FOREVER to get here and when I opened the box all of the stick-on whiskery strips were unstuck from the main bodies of the parts all were all wrapped up in everything! Disappointing...The stainless/chrome beads along the leading edge were not even close to original...Two thumbs down...I sent them back, paid a horrible restocking charge, and learned a couple of things!

most manufacturers offer 2 types of 'whiskers'; a repro style that most likely has a 1/8" flat  chrome bead and no rub blocks; or a 'OE" or original style  that will have the round bead and rub blocks on them. In terms of cost the OE style will be approximately 50% more than the repros. We sold a ton of felts; always the OE style with little problem
