Can you safely dry shift a Muncie?

Can you test shift, or bench shift a Muncie trans without a fill of oil? It only has sticky assembly lube on pretty much everything. Some oil on the gears.

I'd heard somewhere that you shouldn't do it without the proper fill of lube.

True?

personally, I would want to put at least some oil over the gears/synchros just to be safe;

I wouldn't worry about it being filled, but that gear oil REALLY sticks well...
Then again, I could see how having it filled might make sense too - because if you're turning the gears, it would re-lube everything...

I actually filled it with GL-4 Valvoline 80/90. And..ahh, it kind of turns a little smoother. And shifts pretty good.

Who would have known?
