Engine pulled and heads rebuilt on Pontiac after 50 years

I decided after having some issues with the plugs fouling in cylinders 5,8 and a bit of a choppy idle i would have the heads pulled as the engine has never been touched. Compression was tested and strong at 175 and 180 across all cylinders and the engine was running pretty well overall, I was pretty optimistic that the bottom end was all ok after 100,000 plus miles. The end result, the valve guides in those two cylinders were badly worn, the timing chain was original and worn and needed to be replaced and the cam had some worn lobes......so I had the engine pulled, did the rear main bearing oil seal, replaced the  timing chain, installed a new melling cam that is very close to factory specs. The heads had 6 of the valves replaced, all new guides, hardened valve seats, a few new springs, heads machined, engine painted and all back together in a few days. Car is running very well now, smooth idle and improved performance so happy this Scotsman had the work done !

Nice job! Looks great, and certainly a testament to the durability and simplicity of the SBC.

Probably would have gone another 50 without anything done ...

Looks really nice. I only have experince with one 400 small block and that was in the green and gold 2+2 Hillar bought from Clint. Once it got to Toronto Hillar had the engine touched up and a good dual exhaust system installed. I was very impressed with the torque and its ability to lay down two seroius patches of rubber. I am sure yours will be equally if not more impressive Macker

Macker's 400 is sporting the same intake & carb that I put on the car I sold Hillar (1970 300 hp 350).   I sold Macker the intake & carb, and I think the dual snorkel air cleaner.

That  SBC 400 in the Green and Gold car was stout. I'd say it had torque and pulling power on par with a similar displacement big block.
