1966 L72 427 build


So I have the 4 bolt block, 858 square port heads, 6223 crank, dimple rods and factory 069 intake. What I have to figure out is what pistons , cam and lifters to go with? Obviously cant go with the factory specs solid lifters and high dome pistons have to be able to drive this thing on todays gas

Kevin I have had good luck using Speed Pro flat tops giving 9.5-10 to 1 compression using 91 octane fuel.

Forged pistons for sure Kevin. Much more pricey, but way more forgiving with any detonation. Size them to the deck to get that minimum squish distance. I'm running domes in my 496 with approx. 10.2 :1 and no issues on Shell Nitro, but that's with aluminum heads.

  I would second that idea, something under 10:00 to 1. And I know I'll get shot down for this but I'll use cast pistons as long as I can buy them. For the kind of driving I do (and you will likely do as well), I think they are a better choice.

Ok... for a milder build, Hypers would no doubt be just fine. I overkilled it with my build, such is how these things tend to go.

Would you guys go with a coated skirt?

I once saw an engine taken apart with about a thousand miles on it. Coated pistons and the coating was pretty much all worn off. It was barely visible. Maybe that is an exception, I don't know but I haven't forgotten that. Not only was it gone but I hate the idea of anything but oil floating around in the oiling system.

With that said, I'm an uncertified back yard mechanic so don't take my input as scientific!

What about weight of pistons? Since Im using a 6223 crank and not a 7115

I wouldn't worry about it Kevin, unless of course you plan on 24 hour endurance racing with it when finished.
