Proper exhaust manifolds

65 Canso with 283

what are the correct exhaust manifolds? Number? Shape? I kind of remember someone saying one side (driver?) was straight down and the other angled back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

MH

Both angle back. Lots of guys use a straight down on the right side because it's easy to find and the proper angle back for the right side is hard to find. I'll look for pictures of the correct ones.

Notice that one end bolt on each manifold has a very thin casting for the bolt hole. I believe only the Nova manifold has that. There's a few different casting numbers but if you google Nova 283  or Nova 327 manifold you'll be able to find them all.

SOME GUYS HAVE USED 67 --72  TRUCK MANIFOLDS

THE LEFT ONE TURNS BACK, NOT EXACTLY LIKE ORIGINAL , BUT IT WILL WORK

NOT SURE IF IT HAS THE ALT. BRACKET MOUNTING HOLES.

The right side will work fine but it doesn't have that thin bolt flange on the end, no big deal.

However, the left side is angled as it should be which is great but as OURWAGON stated, if you want to use the stock alternator brackets from the Acadian you will be out of luck.

Yes...stock ones are very, very hard to find and most have the broken stud flange at the rear, also very $$$.

There was a place that did extrude honing on exhaust manifolds that I am trying to remember.
Ah yes, Brzezinski Racing Products.
They used to sell prepped exhaust manifolds for class racing where headers were not allowed.

Straight extrude honing may or may not yield dramatic results, but a talented honing artist with a dingleball might do even better.

Think I may have the right (stock) upper arm. Carl: Does it run off the intake and a have a 90 bend on it? Been a while since I've seen one.

Boy, it's been a while since I've worked on these! If I had to guess I'd say the upper alternator brace/bracket/arm was almost flat and bolted to either the front of the intake or the upper water pump bolt on the driver's side. I'll see if I can find a parts picture.

Not sure that is aftermarket , looks like the one from my 59 & 62 283/327 generators. They bolt to the exhaust manifold, maybe even on later alternators.

Thinking genny would have a rear mount support as they are long and only have a front and rear tab.

You are correct, I was remembering my 63 alternator bracket on the 409 and 327.
