Fuel economy on 327/Powerglide

Hey there, just finally depleted my first full tank on my Parisienne and it raised a question - is 43 l/100km normal fuel economy for the car? No burnouts, just slow cruises, however the car was shipped with trucks and trains and i don't know what they were doing there.

Also which gas are people use nowadays as all gas are ethanol now? Am i ok to use mid grade + ethanol treatment fluid?

Thanks

That seems horrible. I could be wrong, but I think the liters should be about 1/3 of that. I don't know the liters per KM, but mine gets 20+ per imperial MPG.

That's 5mpg. Something isn't right. Perhaps a brake dragging?

Timing, spark(s), fuel (is it rich?), air filter, leaks, brake drag. Your car, if running on spec should do much better. How tired is the engine? Compression test? Stuck rings, sticky float, worn out camshaft...

Looking at a road test of a 1967 Impala in a Popular Mechanics mag the reported fuel consumption averaged 13.2 U.S. MPG city, 16.1 U.S. MPG highway. It was reported the same by owners whether 283 & 327! Imperial gallon is 20% larger so 15.84 mpg Imperial city, 19.34 mpg Imperial highway. It is a long way from 5 mpg.

when I managed a tire shop we sold an engine flush product.  First remove all spark plugs and test compression.  Record compression and then add a chemical flush product to the dirty oil and run for 10 minutes.

Drain the oil, remove the spark plugs and retest compression.

Refill with fresh oil and add another chemical in the gas tank and check fuel mileage after the procedure.

Princess auto and ctc sells a variety of chemicals for such a purpose.

Doing  this a couple of times during the season will give you a better assessment of the problem.  You might be able to squeak in a season and then do a full rebuild during the winter months.  You can also be saving up the cash for the rebuild.

Enjoy a trouble free summer and plan for the winter budget.

Got it, will be looking for a shop as soon as the car is re-registered.

What Cliff says has merit. Stuck rings can sometimes be freed up by what Cliff described. Not all cures in a can are useless. Does GM still sell the combustion chamber cleaner named "Cleans"?

Another thing to check: has the carb been messed with over the last few decades? Opinions differ but IMHO a bad rebuild is worse than no rebuild.

The original note in this thread has me a bit stumped. The note contains "however the car was shipped with trucks and trains and i don't know what they were doing there".
Are you saying the car was filled before it was shipped, and now you've driven it to empty and it took x litres over x km? And suspect maybe fuel was burned / stolen / syphoned while being shipped?
Fill it up again, put some miles on it, and see how much it takes to refill it.

There was a quarter tank, maybe a bit more. When I got it it was empty, I got to a gas station on fumes.

The bottom quarter tank burns pretty fast so you can't judge mileage from that. When you fill it to the brim it'll be way past full.

what would help us is knowing your gearing;
gearing should more or less point at what your target or ideal mileage should be at.

for period high performance cars, 9mpg wasn't out of the ordinary;
but for the more pedestrian drivetrains, you should be able to almost triple that...

Interesting subject, since I have several big American Pontiacs (with very problematic cannister style fuel gauges) I got into the habit of keeping a listing on my phone of each fill up in all my Pontiac's with gallons (US), date and odometer reading. With this I've recorded mileage on many cars for years now. Most of my classic car driving is a mix of short suburban and longer country drives and easy on the car is my driving style here are some examples. Since it's hard to get the exact same fillup level every time I'm only posting the cars that have had many recorded fillups and I present the normal range. All have AC unless I say otherwise but I don't use AC much anyhow.

(all in miles per US gallon, multiply by 1.25 to get canadian mpg)

1... 69 LeMans ragtop, 350-330 HO, TH400, 2.93: 12-15
2... 69 GTO hardtop, 400-350 4bbl, M20, 3.23: 10-13
3... 69 Bonneville ragtop, 428-390 HO, th400, 3.42: 10-11
4... 69 Catalina ragtop, 428-360 4bbl, th400, 3.23: 10-12
5... 69 Executive 4dr sedan, 400-290 2bbl, TH400, 2.73: 11-14
6... 69 LeMans 4dr hardtop, 350-265 2bbl, TH400, 2.78: 11-15
7... 69 Firebird ragtop, 250-175 1bbl (OHC6), ST300 (2spd auto), 3.23, no AC: 14-16
8... 69 Catalina ragtop, 400-290 2bbl, TH400, 2.73, no AC: 12-14
9... 69 Firebird ragtop, 250-230 4bbl (OHC6), M20, 3.23, no AC: 13-15

These are all bone stock cars in good tune and are the typical mileage range. I have a 69 2+2 hardtop with the chevy 350-300 4bbl, TH350 and 2.73 no AC but I haven't used it enough to measure mileage but given it weighing less than Catalinas I'd guess it would be similar to the 350 HO LeMans mentioned above

Wouldn't be surprised if the advance in the distributer is seized up. Something to check.

What is the American system?  Are you using the US gallon (not the imperial gallon) in your calculations?

American system is where they use mile, gallons and feet.
Just use Google to convert.
I'm using liters, miles from the dash, convert them to kms and calculate into L per 100 kms.
