Chris, there never was a 396 in a 65 Parisienne, only a small block or a 409. The US had them in 65 in B body but we never had them until 66.

Ahhhhh, I did not know that. What does the air cleaner in 66 look like?

1965 PONTIACS Canadian cars came with both 409 and half way through the year came with 396 engines

 That's what I thought.  Mid-year change from 409 to 396.

That applies to US models but not Canada. I stand by my original statement, there was no 396 available in a 1965 Canadian Pontiac or full size Chevrolet.

I'll gladly apologize for being wrong if someone has documents for a 396 factory installed in a 1965 full size Canadian Pontiac or Chevrolet built in Oshawa for sale in Canada.

Here's a 66 Pontiac 396 air cleaner. As far as I know it's the original air cleaner for this car.

No 396 has ever been factory documented to 1965, some may exist because a Mark IV is an easy swap into a Canadian Poncho B body.  Only 409 in 1965 Canadian Pontiacs as already posted. The fact is the 409 was such a low volume option anyway, financially would have been pure stupidity on GM Canada's part to offer the 396 for part year. Research from when I was researching these things turned up 74 409 '65 Custom Sports with the 340 HP engine. The option list does show the 400 HP engine, single 4bbl with special cam but I have no data so far on production numbers. The only one I have ever seen was a 4 speed Parisienne in Georgetown ON, converted shortly after purchase to the 1964 Dual Quad set up.  We have documented a 409 Canadian Pontiac built April 19, 1965.

Every so often someone claims to have an original 65 396 Canadian car but of course when it's crunch time, no documents or any kind of proof.

With the low numbers of 409s (74?!) it is easy to see why GM Canada did not see it necessary to offer the 396 for 1965. They had to use up their stockpile of 409s!
